Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.

Ian Strage aka Kid Zoom recently introduced his latest installation, Landed, for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. With its focus on architecture, this large, site-specific sculptural work follows his solo exhibitions last year at the National Gallery of Victoria (covered), and at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (covered). The Underdogs Gallery is Lisbon is currently showing a solo from a young illustrator, graphic designer, and visual artist, AkaCorleone. Otherwise known as Pedro Campiche, the Portuguese artist began as an active writer in Lisbon’s graffiti underworld, and has since started exhibiting his work in 2010. Previews: Daniel Arsham – “Kick the Tires and Light the Fires” @ OHWOW Gallery

On April 5th, the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting new works from Daniel Arsham entitled Kick the Tires and Light the Fires. The American artist is known for his sculptural “relics” that take modern items and recreates it in such a way that makes it appear as it would if found in the future as part of an archeological dig as well as works based off himself that resemble the victims of Pompeii. At the end of last year, we had a chance to see for ourselves the genius of Yayoi Kusama while she was showing in New York (here & here). At about the same time, the Japanese artist also opened a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai entitled A Dream I Dreamed featuring a diverse selection of large-scale installations, sculptures, and paintings. Currently showing at the Resnick Pavilion of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through July 27rd is an exhibition featuring Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic is billed as his first museum show in Los Angeles and includes of course his signature “mobiles” and later “stabiles” that have made his work famous around the world. Berlin based artist, Daniel Weissbach, recently opened his solo at Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany. Titled Stellen (to set, to put), this show included new pieces from his ongoing series of works focused on taking apart of real, everyday places, and reinventing them in an artistic context. By mostly creating isolated sections of tiled walls, his prime idea is to show and put accent on the spaces between the tiles, where life leaves marks that are hard to remove.
