MOCA Presents “Rebel” @ 941 N. Highland Avenue

This past weekend, MOCA presented Rebel, an exhibition conceived by James Franco and also including Douglas Gordon, Harmony Korine, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, and Aaron Young. Showing at the JF Chen design space, the group effort is a deconstruction and reinterpretation of the legendary 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause which starred James Dean and Natalie Wood. On Saturday night, Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle St. in Los Angeles will be the stage for 34 of Eishi Takaoka’s new sculptures. The Japanese artist is known for his hand-carved wooden heads which are often painted and then placed atop empty glass medicine bottles. For this week’s Art Focus, we point you to the wire sculptures of Chinese artist Shi Jindian. Bringing to mind the intricate and ethereal mesh work from Do Ho Suh, Shi instead creates his pieces by wrapping steel wires around object and then destroying or extracting the inner object leaving only a metal shadow. AM was fortunate enough to be able to trek down recently to Washington D.C. and catch Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) solo exhibition at the Katzen Arts Center at the American University Museum. Aptly titled Thousand Regards, Matsu presented a balanced mix of works that varied from sculptures, paintings to installations to greet the guests visiting the museum.
