Tomorrow (January 24) marks the opening of a couple art fairs you should know about. Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: LeBasse Projects @ PULSE

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). We’ve already shared photos from a couple booths there (Joshua Liner & Jonathan LeVine), and there is a look at a third booth – LeBasse Projects. We’ve touched on the work of Kazuki Takamatsu before here on AM in a couple group shows, but seeing an entire series of works at the Gallery Tomura booth at SCOPE Miami (highlights here) really piqued our interest. The Japanese artist based in Sendai combines the use of computer imaging with traditional techniques to create eerie ghostlike characters through the medium of acrylic and gouache. During our stroll through the seemingly endless array of booths and artwork during Art Basel in Miami, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the solo from the late Jiro Takamatsu at McCaffrey Fine Art. The influential Japanese artist was known as a writer, sculptor, painter and printmaker with this showing focusing in on his famous shadow pieces. After posting up the photos from Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo during this year’s SCOPE art fair in Miami, it’s now time to share the other artist featured in the Thinkspace booth – Brian Viveros. One of the mainstay satellite fairs in Miami was Art Miami. As previously seen in our coverage of their offshoot fair CONTEXT where pieces purported to be street works from Banksy (not authenticated from PC though), this combined pair of fairs was a feast for the eyes. Already one of the biggest contemporary art galleries in London, White Cube now has the distinction of being Damien Hirst’s only representative gallery after the artist infamously left Gagosian Gallery. With an showing featuring artwork by Hirst, Tracey Emin, Zhang Huan, Christian Marclay, and emerging stud artist Theaster Gates, White Cube offered visual treats for any art lover visiting its Art Basel Miami Beach booth.
