Basel Week Miami ’12: Team Gallery @ Art Basel

Each year at Art Basel Miami Beach, Team Gallery exhibits a collection of some of the most exciting young(er) artists at the fair with work that well represents each one’s respective practice. You can depend on Team to showcase Ryan McGinley, one of its biggest stars, with a couple of breathtaking works at their booth. Basel Week Miami ’12: Joshua Liner Gallery @ PULSE

While checking out the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we made sure to stop by the Joshua Liner booth to see what they had to offer. Featuring a diverse mix of work from artists on their roster, we were particularly enamored with a cluster of ESPO works, a new Ian Francis painting, and a new sound sculpture installation in the form of a chandelier from David Ellis and Roberto Carlos Lange. Basel Week Miami ’12: Invader @ Jonathan LeVine / PULSE

As we wandered the halls of the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we came upon the booth of Jonathan LeVine solely featuring the work of Invader. After seeing his work up and about town, we now had a chance to see some of the French artist’s tiled creations up close. Basel Week Miami ’12: Ambach & Rice @ NADA

Hailing from Los Angeles and formerly of Seattle, Ambach & Rice’s booth at NADA (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami featured two mid-sized drawings by Eric Yahnker from his Long-Banged Lady series and a large-scale piece called The Good Samaritan. Basel Week Miami ’12: Almine Rech Gallery @ Art Basel

With a popular Jeff Koons exhibit at their Brussels gallery just recently coming to a close, Almine Rech arrived at Art Basel Miami Beach exhibiting a good mix of the young (Alex Israel, who also had a show at the gallery last month), established mid-career (Taryn Simon, Ugo Rondinone) and iconic (Ed Ruscha). As we strolled through the new CONTEXT Art Miami (highlights here), one of the booths that drew us in featured artists diplayed by the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. One of the galleries with the best and largest stables of young artists that every collector keeps an eye out for every year at Art Basel Miami Beach is David Kordansky Gallery. The Culver City, CA stalwart represented Los Angeles’ talked-about art scene to the fullest with great pieces by such coveted artists as Aaron Curry, Kathryn Andrews, Valentin Carron, and Mai-Thu Perret. Basel Week Miami ’12: PULSE – Highlights

Another strong fair we visited while we were enjoying Basel Week Miami was PULSE. Featuring many galleries and artists that we were familiar with, it was a nice stroll catching up with them as well as learning about some new artists. With a hugely popular retrospective that just closed at the Berkeley Art Museum, Barry McGee exhibited two new pieces with his new New York gallery Cheim and Read in its booth at Art Basel Miami Beach. A gigantic skull painting by Donald Baechler was another highlight, as it stared blankly at fair-goers. Basel Week Miami ’12: Marian Goodman @ Art Basel

Flanked on two walls by monumental works by Gerhard Richter and Julie Mehretu, Marian Goodman Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach provided spectacular viewing for all that visited its booth. Art market man of the year Gerhard Richter’s striped piece was from his series using a digital process and provided a taste for those that missed his most recent show with Goodman. Three photographs by Rineke Dijkstra covered one wall and a wall text by Lawrence Weiner were just some of the important artists’ works that were seemingly everywhere you looked at […]
