Preview: SugiPOP! @ Portsmouth Museum of Art

One of the most exciting shows we’ve recalled writing about that takes place in New Hampshire is coming up.  SugiPOP! is co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects and will take up residence at the Portsmouth Museum of Art.  It is an exhibition centered around Sugi (meaning “too much”), which is contemporary art inspired by anime, manga and comics.  It includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos and original artwork used to make anime films and manga comics. The show includes pieces created in the 19th century […]

Baby Tattooville ’10: “California Kustom” Museum Reception

As blissful and adventurous as the confines of the Mission Inn (where everything usually goes down) are, sometimes it is good to leave and take a field trip during Baby Tattooville. As has become tradition for the event, the Riverside Art Museum, in conjunction with BT, opened an exhibition featuring artists from the weekend-long extravaganza. The show—which unlike other BT events is open to the public—includes fantastic works by Robert and Suzanne Williams, Ron English, Coop, Michael Hussar, Anthony Ausgang, William Stout, Spain Rodriguez, Van […]

Openings: “Family Tradition” curated by Ron English @ TT Underground Gallery

AM caught the opening of “Family Tradition” at TT Underground Gallery. Curated by Ron English, the group show re-imagines one of the classic mob sagas through the eyes of art. The show featured artists such as Eric White, Travis Louie, Mark Dean Veca, Triston Eaton, Mike Shinoda, Chet Zar to name a few. Check out all the opening night mayhem after he jump.

Supakitch & Koralie mural @ Varldskultur Museum, Gothenburg

AM friends and super French art duo Supakitch and Koralie were recently in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the set-up and opening of “Kimono Fusion,” an exhibition of Japanese fashion mixed with pop, street and graffiti culture at the Varldskultur (World Culture) Museum. In addition to having work in the show, the two spent a few days creating an amazing mural, documented in the video above. Check it out, as well as some still shots from Kimono Fusion after the jump.

Yoshitomo Nara Museum Gala @ Asia Society

It’s been a wild few weeks of activity in which Yoshitomo Nara & Asia Society blessed the city of New York with a series of statues along Park Avenue, an Open-Studio Visit and a fantastic retrospective. It would be only fitting to send Nara-san back to Japan with a big bash. And indeed, earlier this week, Asia Society hosted a museum gala for its distinguished guest artist with many of the art scene’s who’s who was in attendance. A fun time was had by all […]

“Art in the Streets” Exhibition @ MOCA Confirmed by Deitch

Ever since the Deitch appointment at MOCA was announced, it was a question of not if, but when a major street art exhibition was coming to Los Angeles. Well, yesterday, Jeffrey Deitch confirms that indeed, come 2011, “the first major museum survey of the history of graffiti and street art presented in the United States” will be opening it’s doors to the public. With curatorial help from Aaron Rose, Roger Gastman and Fab 5 Freddy, works from more than a hundred street artists, including Banksy, […]

Openings: James Jean – The “Birds and Boys” Series @ 3.1 Phillip Lim – Fashion’s Night Out

High fashion and fine art was exhibited in a seamless mix as James Jean unveiled his Birds and Boys series at 3.1 Phillip Lim during Fashion’s Night Out in West Hollywood. Jean’s fantastically cool portraits of the famous and the beautiful of Los Angeles were hung throughout the store, occupying the same racks as Lim’s elegantly designed threads. The city’s most stylish and hip made it out and the proceeds from the sale of the artist’s work helps to benefit the LACMA Costume Council.  With […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Nobody’s Fool” Retrospective @ Asia Society

Yesterday, AM attended the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s epic retrospective at New York’s Asia Society. With anticipation building since attending his “Open Studio” session a few weeks prior, we didn’t know what more to expect from Nara and YNG/graf aside from the artwork being created by the artist and the cool construction of the “Home” installation. After checking out opening night though, it’s pretty obvious the expansive & comprehensive retrospective put together by curators Miwako Tezuka & Melissa Chiu will delight fans old and new. […]
