Openings: “Juxtapoz x Superflat” @ Vancouver Art Gallery

Three months since its debut at the Seattle Art Fair (covered), the Juxtapoz x Superflat group show co-curated by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco and Takashi Murakami opened on the November 5th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Staying on view until February 5th, the programming included a mixture of talks, lectures, tours, and special guests. The original idea of the showcase was to expand Takashi’s original Superflat theory by including the artists who have been in the pages of the popular arts & culture magazine for the last 22 years. Last week, the heavily anticipated major survey exhibition of the work of KAWS opened at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, a followup to a show at the same institution in 2011 (covered). Currently showing at Monnaie de Paris, Not Afraid of Love is Maurizio Cattelan’s largest exhibition since his retrospective in New York five years ago (covered). The controversial artist’s largest ever showing in Europe will also be one of his most personal with the works chosen by himself that he considers most life-important and significant. As we previously mentioned, on October 20th, a major survey of the work of KAWS will be opening at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, following up on his 2011 show at the same institution (covered). Organized by The Modern’s curator Andrea Karnes in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue explore the development of the artist’s career from the 1990s to the present. Showing: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

At the end of last month, Swoon (interviewed) unveiled the latest iteration of her Thalassa installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Fans of the her work can check out the suspended sculptural piece at the Woodward Avenue entrance through the end of May of next year. This display of Swoon’s work will round out nicely her contributions to the art scene of the Motor City to go along with her exhibition opening soon at Library Street Collective as well as a mural project in the Jefferson-Chalmers district.
