Openings: “De Dentro e De Fora” @ São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP)

A couple nights ago, the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) played host to the opening of De Dentro e De Fora or Inside Out Outside In, seemingly a repeated title for many recent street art exhibitions and videos in some variation or another. Although the name of the exhibition lacked originality, what was important (the art) more than made up for it. Curated by Mariana Martins, Baixo Ribeiro, and Eduardo Saretta, the show featured new works by familiar names to AM readers like Invader […]

Openings: Dabs Myla – “The Best of Times” @ Thinkspace

This past weekend, Thinkspace Gallery unveiled a new exhibit by couple and Australian artists Dabs Myla. Featuring a collection of 3d objects, sketches and paintings, the show was packed from the start and offered the visitors a visual eye feast. Titled as The Best of Times, the latest showing featured a retrospective of their last two years spent across California and the Pacific Northwest. Walls were covered with their iconic animation style and objects hung from the ceiling. Plus, the space featured photographs and small […]

Openings: Rob Sato – “The Open End” @ Copro Gallery

Last weekend, the Copro Gallery unveiled new work by artist Rob Sato. Named The Open End, the exhibition showed a variety of the artist’s latest art which continues to be nothing short of impressive. Various pieces on display featured a combination of the organic and the mechanical, but without going to either side of the spectrum. As usual, his artwork features a great sense of storytelling and movement that’s not always easy to capture on a canvas or print. However, his technique and style lends […]

Openings: Tauba Auerbach – “A Book Is Not An X” @ John McWhinnie & GHB

On Friday, Tauba Auerbach unveiled a truly unique body of work at John McWhinnie @ GHB in East Hampton, NY. The show entitled A Book Is Not An X (previewed) is a play on a statement she made last year in an Artforum review of Carsten Nicolai’s book Grid Index: “a book is an X-axis. The format is almost always linear; the content, bound in a prescribed order, marches single file.” For this exhibition Tauba created six “books” and each plays on this notion and […]

Openings: Dalek – “Prism Break” @ Hurley Space

A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Olek – The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with artist Agata Oleksiak aka Olek. Last time, she took on Wall Street and its famous charging bull and this time, she’s exhibiting her works in a solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show title The Bad Artist Imitate, The Great Artists Steal may sound familiar because you probably saw it mentioned most recently from Banksy at his Bristol Museum show and previously from master Pablo Picasso. Being a performance artist, she got a few helpers to become […]

Just last weekend, legendary Bronx writer COPE2 paid a visit to Copenhagen for the opening of his show at Halvandet. Not only did he bring a plethora of variations of his famous bubble tag, he also worked in an outdoor mural for his fans and was sighted at the Shepard Fairey show. Our photographer Henrik Haven arrived early to document the show.  Full photoset after the jump…

Openings: Andrew Schoultz & Paul Klee – “Images in Dialogue” @ SFMOMA

Just this Saturday, the SFMOMA hosted an intriguing posthumous dialogue between Swiss-born Modernist Paul Klee and the very much living Andrew Schoultz (previewed). Images in Dialogue featured new works from the SF-based Schoultz displayed side by side with Klee’s work with the former pieces created in response to the latter’s paintings. When Schoultz was first approached by SFMOMA curator, John Zarobell regarding the project, he was familiar with Klee’s work, but did not consider him direct influence. As he did more research, he was surprised […]

Openings: Skinner – “The Fragile Art of Existence” @ Shooting Gallery

Never the one to shy away from challenging the viewer’s comfort zone while dragging them down to his own chaotic hell via the minions and demons from his mind, Skinner decided to take a step back from his usual creative process, which is typically done with a sense of attack and urgency. Last Saturday evening saw the opening of his latest show at Shooting Gallery, The Fragile Art of Existence, which features a new series of paintings where he decided to take a few risks […]

Openings: David Stoupakis & Tom Bagshaw – “Walking Within These Shadows” & “Beautiful Imperfections” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This past weekend, the Corey Helford gallery presented the work of both David Stoupakis and Tom Bagshaw. Titled Walking Within These Shadows, Stoupakis’ exhibit displayed artwork that embraces a dark sensibility mixed with a haunting sense of realism. What’s interesting about his latest show is that he understands how to tell well-developed stories and moments of personal reflections through the use of the canvas. Whether it’s two female characters sitting down in a somber mood or a group of skeleton-like figures moving ahead, the paintings […]
