Openings: Laura Ball – “Keep” @ David B. Smith

AM was on hand for the October 16th opening reception of Laura Ball’s newest show Keep, her second solo at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Using watercolor paint and graphite, Ball’s work is a subconscious exploration of the Hero Myth of Joseph Campbell. The series is composed of intertwined animals interacting on a white background, undulating and full of subtle details, making the work highly engaging. Installation shots via the gallery. Openings: JR – “Crossing” @ Lazarides Rathbone

Crossing, a solo featuring all new works from JR (interviewed) opened up on all three levels of Lazarides Rathbone in London a couple weeks ago. Consisting of large format photographs of his art from the streets, pasted wood pieces, color prints, as well as his signature wood mounted monochromatic paper pieces, the exhibition focuses in on two of the French photographer’s recent series of works – Les Bosquets and Unframed Ellis Island. Gauntlet Gallery in San Fransisco is currently showing two exhibitions that celebrate both the analogue and the digital side of the artistic spectrum. Mike Egan’s (interviewed) solo exhibition Live Fast, Die Faster continues his heavily stylised and instantly recognisable series of paintings inspired by German Expressionism, Day of the Dead imagery and his former career as an embalmer and funeral director. Openings: OFFICIELLE Art Fair (Paris)

After a look at the main FIAC art fair in Paris, we now bring you photos from a satellite event – the OFFICIELLE Art Fair. The event held at the Les Docks-Cité de la Mode et du Design on the other side of town hosted over 60 galleries with a focus on emerging artists and more of an emphasis on French galleries. Openings: Dabs Myla – “Before and Further” Popup (Los Angeles)

A couple weeks ago, Dabs Myla opened up an ambitious new exhibition at the Modernica factory property in Los Angeles entitled Before and Further. The title is appropriate as the artistic duo took things to the next level with an immersive installation featuring paintings, sculptures, ceramics, lighting, customized furniture, as well as murals covering the entire facade of the building. Showing: Paul Wackers – “New Alphabet” @ Alice Gallery

New Alphabet, a solo from Paul Wackers will be showing through the rest of the week in Brussels at Alice Gallery. His imagery is almost collage-like in the way he puts together everyday objects, plants, and abstract shapes into one cohesive composition. Along with his signature color-filled paintings that can be seen as a modern take on still life portraits, he also produced some pieces that were in black and white. For the third year running (see 2014), the Mister Freeze exhibition opened recently and gathered over thirty national and international graffiti and street artists in Toulouse, France. Organised by Faute O Graff, the must-see event took place in the Cobalt building, a former industrial warehouse of 26,000 sq ft. During the week, visitors could enjoy artworks of established artists like Alëxone, Gris1 or Reso alongside emerging talents with different artistic styles – graffiti, post-graffiti, illustrative – along with murals, installations and workshops. Openings: “OUTSIDEIN” @ ArtCenter College of Design

Last week, OUTSIDEIN opened at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena with contributions from artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, RISK and Jeff Soto. The exhibition was dedicated to the art of graffiti-based mural painting and hence featured murals painted inside as well as outside by the participants. At the beginning of the month, Spoke Art in San Francisco introduced new works from Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) in her first solo in four years. Befitting the month known for ghouls and ghosts, Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle welcomed in EGO and Grady Gordon to exhibit new works earlier this month. EGO’s The Time Is Never features characters with enough charming personality to overcome their stereotypical spookiness. Symbology used in several pieces, along with star fields, lends an alien or sci-fi mix to the show.
