Openings: Herbert Baglione – “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” @ Iguapop Gallery

Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. Following the dual shows at White Walls and Shooting Gallery earlier this month, we took a short trip down the street to Gallery Heist, the newest art offering in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Openings – New Directions @ White Walls

Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year. Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. New Directions is a look at several distinctly different and unique styles each exploring their own directions. Full photo set after the jump.

Sometimes, we get spoiled at AM with behind the scenes studio visits where we see much of the art work before show openings, but in this case, our visit to David Choe’s (featured) studio definitely did not spoil our appetite for his latest series of works which were revealed at a private opening last night. Kristen Schiele’s solo show “Elektra” opened this past Wednesday evening at New York’s Sloan Fine Art. We love Kristen’s use of multiple mediums and her thrilling mixture of oil paint and screen print in her compositions featuring skewed architecture and a cast of 70’s femme noir characters. AM recently attended the opening for Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer’s “Meticulous Engagements” (previewed) at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Langer, who first caught our eye at Basel last year and is pictured above, brought a nice mix of large and small resin sculptures, examining the violence and fragility of nature. AM went along to Opus Art’s opening of group show “Fresh Cream 2” (previewed) at its Newcastle gallery last week to check out the collective wares of Lex Thomas, Hush, Ghost of a Dream, Charlotte Bracegirdle, Alexandra McLain, Hector de Gregorio, Karl de Vroomen and Teresa Duck. Showing: Anthony Lister – “You Call That a Back Rub..” @ Metro Gallery

Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) delightfully twisted view of superheroes has been on full display the last several weeks in Melbourne at the Metro Gallery. The show “You Call That a Back Rub..”, which closes tomorrow (April 18th), featured the Australian artists signature abstractionism of our favorite comic book characters, sculptures, and of course, a little performance art just like his show in NY (showing concurrently). Trustocorp’s debut show, “An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem” (previewed) opened on Thursday night at the Brooklyn Brothers Gallery to an enthusiastic crowd. The response was no doubt related to the collective’s recent street sign posting spree throughout the country, with the map seen above specifically marking the locations New York forming the shape of an overtly raised middle finger. This past weekend, AM caught the opening of the Date Farmers, Eric White (interviewed), Nicola Verlato and Fulvio Di Piazza at Jonathan Levine Gallery. The two shows were unique as it touched on both ends of the spectrum in terms of dimensions with all the way from large scale museum size works to a cornucopia of medium to smaller size pieces.
