Openings: Anthony Lister – “How to Catch a Time Traveler” @ Lyons Wier Gallery

Anthony Lister (interviewed) opened his latest solo show in New York at the Lyons Wier Gallery last night. In attendance were his usual tied up superheroes, this time with one hanging upside down from the ceiling. As evident by the artwork, Lister continues to explore his fascination with superheroes through paintings, drawings, custom action figures, and sculptures. More pics after the jump…

Thursday night, Ryan McGinley opened his latest body or work “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” at SOHO’s Team Gallery. This homecoming show for the young and talented photographer was jammed packed from the opening moments – it almost seemed that every other attendee in the dense crowd was a friend or acquaintance of the renowned photographer. Openings: Michael Page “Return of the Nephilim” @ Copro Gallery

AM was on hand when Michael Page (interviewed) opened his show “Return of the Nephilim” at Copro Gallery a couple weekends ago. Right next door to the Hi-Fructose Five Year Anniversary show was a more focused body of work from Page continuing to explore the abstraction he began at his last show at Varnish Fine Arts. The lush and intensely hued paintings are Page’s interpretation of the mysterious Nephilim from the Old Testament. Photos after the jump…

Nate Frizzell (featured) will be opening his first solo show in the UK next week (March 26th) at the bo.lee Gallery in Bath. The new body of work entitled “Every New Beginning Starts with Another Beginnings End” will feature oil paintings from Nate for the first time. Last Saturday, AM attended Copro Gallery for the anniversary of one of our favorite magazines – Hi-Fructose. Known for bringing some of the best pop surrealist art coverage for the past 5 years, Hi-Fructose curated a diverse and top notch mix of some of the best talent in the industry. Opening alongside Aaron Nagel’s Marks at the Shooting Gallery was Kevin Cyr and Jessica Hess‘ “Temporal Surfaces” at the adjoining White Walls gallery. Cleverly curated by Lainya Maganya, “Temporal Surfaces” brings together two documentarists of the bleak urban and industrial landscape. Jessica Hess’ calming oil-based renditions of derelict billboards and abandoned railway cars accurately captures the temporal and transitional movement of light across these surfaces while invigorating life and beauty into otherwise drab and dreary locales. Last weekend, the Last Rites Gallery hosted artists Chris Peters’ (previewed) and David R. Choquette‘s newest bodies of work. Both artists were in attendance and focused on subject matter consistent with what we have come to expect from the gallery – Peters with his signature skeletal forms and Choquette with his celebration of the grotesque. Last Saturday night saw the grand opening of San Francisco’s newest and very highly anticipated art space, Guerrero Gallery (previewed).
