After 7 years in business, San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery celebrated their anniversary with a stellar solo show by Oakland based artist Aaron Nagel this past weekend. Entitled “Marks” (previewed), Aaron’s show features a bounty of breast-baring buxoms, many of whom have been impaled by arrows, carefully combining a controversial mix of religious iconography and contemporary portraiture, certain to leave a mark on the viewer. One of the highlights of Armory Week was a pop-up show like none other thrown by the Carmichael Gallery and Jun Lee at the Ogilvy & Mather’s Manhattan corporate offices. Last weekend, Camille Rose Garcia kicked off her book signing tour at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. There were long lines as fans queued up to get her illustrated “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” book signed and to check out the accompanying exhibition entitled “Down The Rabbit Hole”. West Hollywood’s fledgling, ambitious, and architecturally magnificent Prism gallery opened its second exhibition this past weekend. Delivering on their promise to show internationally recognized artists, Prism hosted the controversial and legendary Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, with a selection of about 70 of his works. The Tokyo-based artist is one of Japan’s most accomplished, notable, and respected photographers. His photos explore topics including love and sex and features his wife, Yoko, in much of his work. This past March 4th will end up being a significant date in the history of Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The standard-bearer of all contemporary art galleries in the world premiered a major addition to their 90210 space. In addition, Andreas Gursky, one of the most well-known artists working in the photography medium, opened his newest major solo exhibition at the gallery. Aaron Nagel opens his debut solo show in SF at The Shooting Gallery this Saturday, March 6th. The exhibition is entitled “Marks”, as in a target, a sign or indication of a quality or feeling, or a small area on a surface having a different color from its surroundings, typically one caused by accident or damage. Benefit: “Swimming Cities” India Fundraiser

Swoon (interviewed) and her friends are throwing a benefit silent auction this Friday, March 5th, to raise funds for a Swimming Cities project on India’s Ganges river. The fundraiser will feature work from a nice list of artists (seen after the jump), as well as the unveiling of a 18′ x 8′handcrafted, stainless steel catamaran powered by a motorcycle driven paddle wheel. Opening in the project room at LeBasse Projects along with Yoshitaka Amano’s show was an installation from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Entitled “Tell Me A Story”, the hanging sculptures were reminiscent of the piece from his solo show last May.
