Openings: Jab Strong Fierce (Street Fighter Tribute Show) @ Nucleus Gallery

AM stopped by Nucleus Gallery couple weekends ago to check out the art and festivities of the Street Fighter Tribute show. The video game inspired art certainly delighted the crowd, but just as entertaining were the events associated with the show like the cosplay contest and the street fighter playing tournament. â€œEgo, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories,â€ the latest body of work by Sam Flores (interviewed) opened to a packed crowd Saturday night at Subliminal Projects. The show, laid out in Flores’ storybook illustration world, revolved around the premise of the basics of everyday human struggle, controlling our inner demons and the balance between good and bad. Gary Baseman and Corey Helford Gallery pulled out all the stops for last night’s Carnivale-style extravaganza celebrating “La Noche de la Fusion” (covered), Baseman’s solo return to Los Angeles in over two years. Featuring Baseman-designed costumes come to life, carnival games, a fire bowl to burn away your fears and insecurities, an animation reel exploring Toby’s Travels and the Enlightened Chou, as well as eye-candy as far as the eyes could see, this was certainly an event to remember. Corey Helford Gallery held a very special collector’s preview of Gary Basemanâ€™s latest exhibition “La Noche de la Fusion.” The amazing “Enlightened Chou” installation was more impressive, once assembled, than when we previewed it inÂ our studio visit. The installation is comprised of many Chous, each one is from a different country: Thailand, India, Mexico, Brazil, Russia. Stop and get it fresh – Banksy at Andipa Gallery! This past weekend, Andipa held an exhibition of some elite secondary market canvases by the Bristol Bomber. Openings: Aiko – “Love Monster” @ Joshua Liner

AM was out in Chelsea last Saturday night to attend the opening of AIKO’s solo show “Love Monster” at Joshua Liner Gallery. And Lady Aiko didn’t disappoint, filling the entire gallery with eye-popping works, from floor to ceiling mixed-media canvases to striking stenciled windows to an installation of stenciled paint cans. By all accounts, the show is a must see. But for those who can’t get there in person, check out the pics after the jump.

An enthused crowd was on hand at Kinsey/DesForges for the opening of â€œChasing Castlesâ€ (previewed), the first showing of a full-body of work in the United States by London based artists Conor Harrington and Chloe Early (interviewed). Both made the trip across the pond for the opening and happily chatted with fans about their work and the underlying message behind their rich, multi-layered, vibrantly colored pieces. It seems that some shows get all the glitz & glamour, and some shows just slide in & out without much ruckus. But one things for sure, high profile or not, Takashi Murakami and his Kaikai Kiki juggernaut do not half-step anything. Takashi’s latest show “Inochi” at Tokyo’sÂ Kaikai KiKi Gallery ended last night, and AM has some pics from the land of the rising sun. More after the jump.

The mother of all drawing shows opened last weekend at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco.Â Featuring drawings from over 400 artists, the DRAW show is definitely one of the largest of its kind featuring artists we are all familiar with.Â The exhibition started in 2006 at Fuse Gallery in NY, then to SXSW in 2007, and last year it was held at StolenSpace in London.Â Make sure you stop by for a look if you are in the bay area but if you aren’t, […]
