Openings: Jenny Morgan – “The Golden Hour” @ Plus Gallery

AM was on hand for Jenny Morgan’s 13th solo, The Golden Hour, at Denver’s Plus Gallery. The buzz around the exhibition was palpable with Morgan being on the cover of the August issue of Juxtapoz. The fact that this is a homecoming of sorts (she studied art at The Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and had interned at the gallery) made the show even more high energy. When viewing the eight new works, the most marked change is a color palette relying more on yellow, orange and red gradients to […]

Openings: Reka & Two One – “Trip The Light” & “Hunted Hunter’s Head” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace Gallery is opening the new season in London with two concurrent solo shows from Australian artists based in Berlin – Reka (seen above) with a body of work entitled Trip The Light and paintings from Two One’s collectively named Hunted Hunter’s Head. Reka’s fresh paintings are  inspired by his mother, who was a ballerina. His brushstrokes reflect the graceful movements of a female dancer though a monochromatic palette. Referenced in John Milton’s 1645 poem L’Allegro, to “trip the light fantastic” alludes to those who dance without inhibition. In parallel, Reka has given a new […]

Openings: KAWS – “Man’s Best Friend” @ Honor Fraser Gallery

Last night, the Honor Fraser Gallery hosted the highly anticipated return (covered) of Brian Donnelly (aka KAWS) to Los Angeles with a show entitled Man’s Best Friend. As implied by the title, Snoopy, along with a cast of familiar characters from Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts series were the focus of the Brooklyn-based artist’s imagery. The black and white utilized for a good portion of the work featuring the comic strip provided a stark contrast to the vivid colors seen in KAWS’ previous acrylic paintings, but it […]

Openings: DALeast – “The Laten Photon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

DALeast (interviewed) recently opened his solo The Laten Photon at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Taking a step back from creating murals around the world, the Chinese artist spent last year focused more on his studio work, which is clearly noticeable from the pieces presented. Following the success of his previous show with the gallery almost two years ago (covered), and last year’s UK sold out solo debut (covered), this exhibition attracted a lot of art lovers and generated some great feedback. One thing that could be heard at the gallery was that […]

Following his exhibition 10,000 Years From Now at Lazarides Rathbone (covered here) back in 2012, the Bristol-based Ian Francis (featured) has returning to London for a solo exhibition Endless Summer at The Outsiders. Blending photorealism with abstract landscapes, the new body of work features a series of same sized intimate studies that encapsulate a collection of multiple narratives and disparate moments in time. Take a look at more photos from the opening below. Openings: Mr Jago – ‘New Co-ordinates’ & Poesia – ‘Reflexive’ @ White Walls & Shooting Gallery

If you have more than a passing interest in abstract graffiti, then White Walls and Shooting Gallery’s August double-header would have peaked your interest. Transcend members Mr Jago (seen above) from Bristol in the UK and local boy Poesia (seen below) opened a pair of solo exhibitions respectively entitled New Co-ordinates and Reflexive. Jago’s organic compositions have an ethereal flow, and whilst Poesia’s angular geometric biased work visually couldn’t be more different, both contain a similar dynamism within their work, forged from their pursuit of abstraction of the work […]

Recap: Kelsey Brookes – “Sleep: The Science and The Mystery” @ LSC Gallery

An intriguing show that recently ended in Detroit at the Library Street Collective featured new works from Kelsey Brookes. Collectively entitled Sleep: The Science and the Mystery, the new paintings from the former biochemist are constructed painstakingly with colorful patterns that in an abstract way define chemical and molecular structures. This particular set of mesmerizing works from the San Diego area based artist focused on Acetylcholine, Histamine, Norepinephrine and GABA, four neurotransmitters which help regulate sleep.
