Openings: Scott Campbell – “Things Get Better” @ OHWOW Gallery

Last night, Scott Campbell unveiled a new body of work in Los Angeles at OHWOW Gallery entitled Things Get Better. Mostly consisting of paintings of what he calls “Frankenguns,” jerry-rigged tattoo guns that he was able to make inside of jails in Mexico (with looser regulations than in the United States) and administer tattoos to inmates. With the art world focus on Hong Kong right now because of Art Basel (covered), AM paid another high profile show a visit (also see Murakami & Basquiat). Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

To coincide with the opening of Art Basel Hong Kong (covered), the local Gagosian Gallery branch has opened up a new exhibition of Jean Michel-Basquiat’s work, a first for the former British colony. On display were multiple paintings, some large, from the late great New York-based graffiti artist, with a showing similar to the one held at the NY Gagosian earlier this year (covered). Openings: Takashi Murakami @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

After a succesful showing for Takashi Murakami in Los Angeles at Blum & Poe (covered), the renowned Japanese artist has returned to Asia for a solo showing at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong. The show which opened last night includes a selection of paintings & sculptures and was timed nicely to welcome in collectors in town for Art Basel (HK edition). During Frieze Week, Pace Gallery held the much anticipated opening for Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. The solo exhibition is Nara’s first with the blue chip gallery since joining its esteemed roster in 2011. Last month, the Petaluma Art Center north of San Francisco opened up an exhibition entitled Cosmic Terrain, the brainchild of Mars-1, Damon Soule, and Oliver Vernon. Openings: Richard Colman @ Guerrero Gallery

We last heard from Richard Colman when he showed in Toronto (covered) last year with Andrew Schoultz. This time around, he is showing alongside another talented artist, Alex Lukas (covered), at the Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco. Lukas filled the project room with a selection of paintings and monochromatic works populated by a surreal mix of his hooded figures, nudes, and bears. Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments. Openings: Nychos – “Pellis Os Omentum” @ Galo Art Gallery

Currently on display through the weekend at the Galo Art Gallery in Torino, Italy is a solo show from Austrian painter Nychos. Pellis Os Omentum includes a series of paintings and drawings that closely references the anatomical focus and cartoonish quality of his street work. Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works.
