Releases: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “The Gobbler” Print

Halloween is barely over and Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) is already looking to Thanksgiving, or did he just combine both? The Gobbler is a 20″ x 20″ print just released by the Los Angeles-based artist and is a fine example of his surrealistic artistic vision. On November 5th, Hatched In Prison will open at Ricco/Maresca in New York, a testament to the long road Gil Batle has traveled and where art has taken him. Born and raised in San Francisco to Filipino parents, he has been in and out of five California prisons for eight years over a twenty year period. Openings: Nychos – “Translucent Fear” @ Kolly Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Translucent Fear, a new solo show from Nychos, opened at the Kolly Gallery in Zurich. The title of the exhibition references a new technique the Austrian artist has developed to continue his anatomical renderings by adding a layer of translucent skin to his subjects. Applied to both portraits as well as fierce creatures in combat, the x-ray vision of prolific street artist was in full effect in this new body of work. Discuss Nychos here.

Previews: Isaac Cordal – “Urban Inertia” @ C.O.A. Gallery

C.O.A. Gallery in Montreal will be opening a solo show by Isaac Cordal on October 29th. The Spanish artist is currently adding final touches to Urban Inertia, an installation that will continue the public interventions he has been working on around the city in the last few weeks. Cordal is known for his small cement, now resin, sculptures that he places in cracks in the walls, puddles, sidewalks, rooftops, and other nooks and crannies in the urban environment. Streets: ABOVE – “Incognito” (Johannesburg)

Earlier this month, ABOVE (interviewed) was in South Africa painting a mural he has entitled Incognito for the City Of Gold Festival. Measuring 33 meters tall and 17 meters wide, the wall took six full days to paint and utilized over 20 colors. Located in Jeppestown, piece featuring the American artist’s iconic arrow imagery and can even be seen from the M1 freeway framed by the iconic Johannesburg skyline. Photo credit: Cale Waddacor. Openings: Laura Ball – “Keep” @ David B. Smith

AM was on hand for the October 16th opening reception of Laura Ball’s newest show Keep, her second solo at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Using watercolor paint and graphite, Ball’s work is a subconscious exploration of the Hero Myth of Joseph Campbell. The series is composed of intertwined animals interacting on a white background, undulating and full of subtle details, making the work highly engaging. Installation shots via the gallery. Openings: JR – “Crossing” @ Lazarides Rathbone

Crossing, a solo featuring all new works from JR (interviewed) opened up on all three levels of Lazarides Rathbone in London a couple weeks ago. Consisting of large format photographs of his art from the streets, pasted wood pieces, color prints, as well as his signature wood mounted monochromatic paper pieces, the exhibition focuses in on two of the French photographer’s recent series of works – Les Bosquets and Unframed Ellis Island.
