We don’t often cover taxidermic art here on AM, but when we do, it’s usually pretty special (also see Polly Morgan and David Shrigley). London-based Kate MccGwire’s recent work is only vaguely related to taxidermy but does share a common thread with the use of feathers to create beautiful yet sometimes disturbing sculptures and installations. After an epic recreation of the historic Street Market installation along with Barry McGee and Todd James at the MOCA, Steve Powers aka ESPO has already moved on to his next undertaking. This time, it will be a solo endeavor at the V1 Gallery in Copenhagen entitled Days opening on May 6th. Openings: Kevin Cyr – “Home in the Weeds” @ 941 Geary

Last night, 941 Geary hosted the opening of Kevin Cyr’s (interviewed) solo Home in the Weeds in San Francisco. The last time he showed at the Bay Area, it was a two-person show at sister gallery White Walls (covered) and featured his popular depictions of the vandalized vehicles. This time around though, the Brooklyn-based artist brought along some still life paintings featuring everyday objects like old radios or pen knives. Releases / Signings: Clare Rojas – “Everything Flowers” @ Park Life

Bay Area-based Clare Rojas will be signing her new book, Everything Flowers, at Park Life next Friday (May 6th). The hardcover, coming in at 96 pages, features much of her folk art-inspired paintings and is a must have for fans of the Mission School artist. Last night, AM stopped by the Marc Jancou Contemporary to check out New York-based Scott Campbell part of the exhibition Blankness Is Not A Void, a three person affair that also included the late Steven Parrino and Raymond Pettibon (more on this later). The tattoo-turned-fine artist brought with him his signature cut currency as well as some delicate ostrich eggshell paintings, first seen at his recent Los Angeles show (covered) just last month. Tonight in New York City, Marc Jancou Contemporary opens a compelling three person exhibition, entitled Blankness Is Not A Void. Including works from Scott Campbell, Raymond Pettibon, and Steven Parrino, the trio of artists examine the everpresent themes of love, sex, and death in their own unique and unconventional ways. Following-up on Hueless (covered), which consisted of all black and white art, Chelsea’s Mallick Williams & Co. recently opened a new exhibition entitled Spectrum, which is aptly named not only because of its array of vibrantly colorful works, but also because the group show features a wide range of contemporary painters, including Chor Boogie, Lu Gold, Kiji McCafferty, Erik Otto and Kate Pane. Painter and toy mogul Joe Ledbetter will be presenting his newest solo show this June at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica.
