The show has been on display since last weekend but the opening reception is this Saturday, September 19th at the Culver City gallery. We sat down with him to talk about his beautiful paintings which incorporate abstract and realistic elements at the same time lending to a dream-like, ethereal feel to this body of work. Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Barberadise” @ Honor Fraser

Newjungle (left), Madgladtree (center),  Wildjungle (right) AM was on hand as Kenny Scharf opened his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2005.  Honor Fraser Gallery was filled with groovy, brightly colored florescent paintings and sculptures from the legendary Pop artist.  Continuing with his mission of penetrating the boundaries of fine art through the use and reference of popular culture, Scharf’s paintings features characters from the Hanna-Barbera universe, mainly The Flinstones and The Jetsons. Read the rest of the entry and view more photos after […]

Teaser: Antony Micallef – “Becoming Animal” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

The man once mentioned as “this generation’s Francis Bacon” is about to have a show and AM can’t wait! Last time, we saw “Ant” was at Outsiders NYC (covered) and his abstract goodness delighted the New York crowd. His latest solo “Becoming Animal” looks to be EPIC! Check out this appetizing image from the coming show. Only 10 more days until Antony Micallef returns to London to show at Lazarides on September 25th. Get ready… Discuss this show here. Openings: Dain – “Copesetic” @ Brooklynite Gallery

“Copesetic” is the name of Dain’s first ever solo show at the Brooklynite Gallery. It means “fine and dandy,” a throwback term from the early 1940’s. When Brooklynite released the preview video for the show (here), it seemed hilarious and appropriate for the “old school” themed show. Little did we know that Rae and Hope of Brooklynite were going to literally transform the ENTIRE gallery into a replica New York “Speakeasy” complete with crystal chandeliers, floor to ceiling wall paper, and even transforming their outdoor […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – “As Cold As They Come” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Continuing with our coverage of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s massive kick off of the new art season, AM brings you Mark Dean Veca’s “As Cold As They Come.” This psychedelic body of work continues where his last show “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” left off (covered/interviewed). At the center is “Popeyeconography,” which is a series based on the classic Popeye cartoon. It was great to see Brutus, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Swee’ Pea redone under Mark’s surreal biomorphic style. He even had time to sneak in […]

Teaser: Masakatsu Sashie – “Twentieth Century Boy”

On September 30th, Darren Romanelli (Dr. Romanelli) and Eric Nakamura (Giant Robot) will be presenting Twentieth Century Boy, a one-night show featuring new paintings by Masakatsu Sashie (covered) paying tribute to T. Rex. For those who don’t know, T. Rex was a 70s British glam-rock band led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Marc Bolan, probably best known for their hit Bang a Gong (Get It On) from the album Electric Warrior (later covered and made a hit again by 80s “supergroup” Power Station). Apparently, Sashie is a big […]

Openings: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Something about LeBasse Projects’ new space brings out the best in its stable of artists. With Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) taking it up another level (here & here), Edwin Ushiro could not help but elevate his game for his solo that opened last weekend, “Softly Encompassing the Womb.”  With a body of work inspired by childhood ghost stories he heard growing up in Hawaii, Ushiro impressed the crowd with the meaningful and personal work as well as dazzled eyes with his new vibrant […]

Video/Preview: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

This year’s Biennale de Lyon will be opening soon with the theme of “The Spectacle of Everyday.” Curated by SF based Hou Hanru, it’s not surprising that this year Barry McGee will be participating in the annual art event in Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area (behind Paris) in the heart of France (Sept 16th – Jan 3rd). Take a look at glimpses of McGee hard at work creating one of the fantastic installations he is famous for in the video above. Discuss Barry McGee […]

Openings: D*Face – “Ludovico Aversion Therapy/All Your Dreams Belong To Us” @ Jonathan LeVine

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending the private viewing of D*Face’s debut U.S. solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Following the sneak preview we got from interviewing him and visiting his studio in London, it was hard to sit still and wait for the curtains to come up to enjoy the full body of work and installations. Opening alongside of Mark Dean Veca (more on that later), there were plenty of peers in attendance – Kaws, Stash, Eric Haze, to name a few. […]
