The London book launch for Gestalten’s “Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art” took place on Friday last week at Phillips de Pury’s Victoria headquarters to a healthy crowd and with a celebratory vibe. Many of the book’s contributors joined the editors of the book, Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie, to toast the success of just how well this mammoth publication turned out. Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. Two of our favorite artists from the contemporary rock poster renaissance currently underway, Aaron Horkey and Jay Ryan, have just released a collaborative 25-color screenprint entitled “Versus”. It looks like Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) has just released a new print with Modern Multiples (who we visited last November) in an edition of 36. Entitled “As Cold As They Come”, our readers may remember the image from Mark’s show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (covered) last September. As hinted in our previous coverage of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) collaboration with Medicom, there is another surprise collaborator in this project: Nike. The unique artwork/pattern designed by Matsu for the Bearbrick project was utilized for a Nike Sportswear package which is coming out this month. This very limited set contains the medicom bearbrick (covered), a slick NSW Sportsman Jacket and a newly designed Nike Tekapo Slide Sandal. Some of our lucky readers in Japan have already seen this limited edition book about Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyams’s (interviewed) career and artwork. The book was initially released regionally in Japan this past January, but now, this amazing book has finally made its way to the United States.
