Teaser: Marcel Dzama – “Behind Every Curtain” @ David Zwirner

Opening tomorrow at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest solo show by Marcel Dzama, entitled Behind Every Curtain. The exhibition will feature the artist’s film, A Game of Chess, alongside related drawings, sculptures and dioramas. As the name suggests, the movie is based on the classic strategy board game, with Dzama’s fantastic characters dressed in chess piece-themed costumes and masks, battling to the death on top of a checkered board. Teaser: “Lined In Lead” @ Gallery Nucleus

As the title suggests, Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra will be holding a group show in March featuring works done in graphite. They’ve assembled a nice list of artists who are involved including Alexandre Day, Andrew Hem, and Rob Sato (full list here). Teaser: “Pens and Needles” @ London Miles

Coming up later this month, February 25th to be exact, the London Miles Gallery will be hosting a group show based thematically on tattoos and their associated paraphernalia. Entitled “Pens and Needles”, the exhibition will feature photographs, original stencils from tattoos, paintings and live tattooing and includes artist (fine art and tattoo artists) Shawn Barber, Estevan Oriol, and Tom Bagshaw. It certainly sounds like a night for good art, especially if you are into the culture.

This Thursday night, February 10th, Black Rat Projects will open their first show of the year – Printmaking Today. Husband and and wife duo, Colin & Sas Christian (interviewed), return to the Opera Gallery in March, this time in New York. After a strong homecoming of sorts last February in London with a show entitled Inner Space (covered), they are again collaboratively creating a new body of work. It looks like Titi Freak has been busy in Japan getting up on the streets (seen after the jump) as well as painting this mural for the Crazy Crimers 2 group show. Teaser: “New Moon” @ Myplasticheart

On February 11th, about a week after Chinese new year, myplasticheart in New York will open their doors to New Moon, a group exhibition featuring reinterpretations of the Chinese zodiac. Artists like Amy Sol (interviewed) had many choices (she chose the dragon), considering that there are twelve animals in all – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Teaser: Mark Dean Veca C.O.L.A. Fellowship Exhibition

Oh Yeah!  Here is a little teaser for the upcoming C.O.L.A. Fellowship exhibition in May at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Each year the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) awards Individual Artist Fellowships to thirteen exemplary midcareer visual, performing and literary artists and our friend Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) was chosen as one of the recipients.
