Here you can see the gallery from the back with one of his signature octopi chandeliers ready to go. Teaser: Andy Denzler – “Freeze Frame Paintings” @ Michael Schultz Gallery (Seoul)

Swiss contemporary artist Andy Denzler will be dispatching a new body of work down to Seoul, Korea for an upcoming solo exhibition with Michael Shultz Gallery. Opening Thursday, Janurary 27th, the talented oil painter will show a selection of his uniquely constructed works, deliberately fragmenting his landscape based portraits in unusual ways. The resulting imagery almost has a look of a digital image in which the pixels had been reassembled imprecisely or the feel of a fading memory being recounted in ambiguous detail. With work […]

Teaser / Setup: Ellis G. – Permanently Temporary @ Mighty Tanaka

It looks like our friend Ellis Gallagher’s (interviewed) is setting up for his latest show Temporarily Permanent, a title that certainly describes the state of street art, especially when mostly done with chalk in his case. With this newest endeavor, Ellis is putting on a show in NYC again, with the first being at Collective Hardware in 2009. Head over to the Mighty Tanaka tomorrow night, January 21st, if you are interested because for the first time, original shadow & chalk drawings will be available […]

Teaser: Scott C. – “The Great Showdowns” @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Those of you who are familiar with Scott Campbell’s work, know that one the greatest series he has created is his “Great Showdowns”. In these little works of art, the SF based artist pits archnemeses and natural enemies against each other in epic clashes that play out from movies, pop culture, and thru his clever imagination.  Over 200 of these classic battles will be on display starting February 4th at Gallery 1988 in Melrose and if we were you, we would make plans to be […]

Teaser: Ryan McLennan – “New Works” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Building off last years illustrious Grand Prize Award from West Collection, Ryan McLennan is set to reveal his newest body of work with David B. Smith Gallery. Opening Friday, January 28th, along side Laura Ball (teased), New Works will continue Ryan’s playful, yet intelligent artistic narrative incorporating themes of ecology, natural history, and evolution. The cycle of life plays a pervasive role in his compositions as well, as diverse animal species interact together in bleak landscapes and grim scenarios within his expertly crafted acrylic and […]

Streets / Teaser: Escif @ Fifty24SF

Take a look at this sweet new street piece from Escif entitled “Black Kiss.” We were originally going to save this for Valentine’s but we also wanted to take the chance to tell our SF readers about his upcoming show at Fifty24SF in June. The Spanish artist will be showing alongside compatriot SAN with hopefully some collaborative pieces in the works. We would love to see some murals, installations, and larger works that have not been seen much in previous shows like the one Escif […]

Teaser: Josh Keyes – “The Magicians Garden” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

Tirelessly sketching, Josh Keyes continues the neverending evolution of his dystopian narrative in preparation for his next solo exhibition, entitled The Magicians Garden, at Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco. Opening April 7th, Josh recently stated in an interview the new body of work “will showcase imagery that plays on genetic mutations in a post apocalyptic setting”. If the meticulously executed reference drawing above is any indication of what is in store, the show should continue Josh’s uncanny ability to break new conceptual and […]

Teaser: Laura Ball – “Growing Pains” @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may remember back at 2009’s Art Basel in Miami, we became enamored with the work of SF based artist Laura Ball. Well, we are delighted to learn that she will be showing a new body of work entitled “Growing Pains” at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver alongside Ryan McLennan at the end of the month.  We’ll have more to follow but for now, enjoy this complex animal assemblage painting from the upcoming show.

Teaser: Kenny Scharf – “Naturafutura” & “Three Dozen!” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

With an impressive December to serve as a launch pad, including his traffic-inducing mural completed at the iconic Houston and Bowery location (covered), a playful blacklight infested mobile trailer installation at Wynwood Walls during Basel Week (covered), and his colorful retrofitting of The Hole’s gallery space with Hot Glue Hullabaloo (covered), Kenny Scharf will launch into the new year with not one but two exhibitions on tap the same night with Paul Kasmin Gallery. Opening on January 27th at one of their two Chelsea locations, […]
