Earlier this month, we shared some shots of work from artist JR (interviewed) from his solo at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. Not surprisingly, while there, the French “photograffeur” spent time on the streets working on new pieces to share with the public. Continuing the concepts of his UNFRAMED project, he visited residents in the area and chose some of their photos to paste up, exploring the city’s history as the link between Germany and France. It’s time for another Art Focus, with this edition introducing the work of Tom McKinley. The San Francisco based artist works in oils, creating paintings of mid-century and modern homes seen typically from outside, often times illuminated by twilight. Rendered in a photo-realistic style, the unoccupied architectural gems filled with art and furniture almost make a viewer feel like a voyeur as well as a little envious of spaces that we may never have. Last month, AM caught up with Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk as she braved the polar vortex conditions that have plagued NYC all winter. Spending more than a week hand painting the entire Bowery and Houston mural with her signature style, she was finally able to completed her visual contribution to the iconic New York street corner.
