Jeff Koons/LACMA Train x Crane Project

When news came out about the $25 million sculpture that LACMA commissioned Jeff Koons to do, we were a little underwhelmed by the idea. A life-size replica of a locomotive dangling from a crane sounded impressive enough but what does it all mean? After watching the Koons studio visit video last week, we realized that the train was going to be motorized (check the 1:04 mark) which makes it a little more interesting but we’re not sure if it’s the best use of $25 million.

Preview: Banksy @ Andipa Gallery

Old school London mainstay Andipa Gallery is going to the streets and holding an exhibition of Banksy’s rare works on canvas. Guess it’s time the old money flexed it’s muscles and showcased some choice secondary market pieces from one of United Kingdom’s finest. A veritable gem amongst gems is the ginormous “Are You Using That Chair?” measuring over 7 x 14′. This is by far the largest canvas that we’ve seen from Banksy. This remix of Edward Hopper’s 1942 masterpiece “Nighthawks” is an iconic example […]

Preview: Saturday @ Phillips NYC

Last night, Phillips De Pury in New York City held a special preview of the lots from their Saturday sale coming up this weekend. AM loves Saturday @ Phillips because of its increased accessibility compared with other higher-end contemporary auctions, which are typically held on mid-week afternoons and evenings, making them difficult for most working people to attend. In addition, Phillips Saturday sales are known for a wide range of items, including a great selection of urban, street and other emerging art, as well as […]

Releases: Bronze Pollard – Tim Biskup

Tim Biskup has been teasing his collectors with new images of his 7″ Bronze Pollard on his blog.  We like the new faceted look which mirrors the evolution of style in his paintings.  The figure will be produced with an edition of 44 and will be stamped and initialed on the feet. With his previous bronze release, the 2″ Iki, costing about $300, fans had better start saving now for the June release. More images after the jump.

Streets: Faile – Spinning Prayer Wheel

Brooklyn based collective Faile have taken their street work to another level and put a nice “spin” on things by installing one of their prayer wheels (close-up feature) on North 6th Street in the Williamsburg neighborhood of New York City. Hand-carved from Merbau wood, the prayer wheels made their debut at Faile’s “Lost in Glimmering Shadows” (covered) show last year. Hopefully the steel bolted base and 100 pound weight means this piece will be around for fans to enjoy for some time – wishful thinking. […]

Souther Salazar – “Above the Influence” Video – Family Guy Parody

Remember the “Above the Influence” anti-drug ad (seen below) done by artist Souther Salazar a while back. Well, after many amateur parodies done by netizens (some NSFW), popular TV show Family Guy has stepped in with their own version a couple days ago (seen above at the 7:31 mark). An obvious statement, but as the art of our generation gets more mainstream and advertisers realize the power of being in touch with our demographic, we will see more and more references (ie: parody of Shepard […]

Openings: Aiko – “Love Monster” @ Joshua Liner

AM was out in Chelsea last Saturday night to attend the opening of AIKO’s solo show “Love Monster” at Joshua Liner Gallery. And Lady Aiko didn’t disappoint, filling the entire gallery with eye-popping works, from floor to ceiling mixed-media canvases to striking stenciled windows to an installation of stenciled paint cans. By all accounts, the show is a must see. But for those who can’t get there in person, check out the pics after the jump.

Preview: Dalek @ Galerie Magda Danysz

When we last talked to James Marshall aka Dalek (interviewed), he was working on the installations for his show at Redux Contemporary.  Next up is a two-person show with his friend Mike Giant at Paris gallery Magda Danysz where Dalek continues to further explore geometric abstraction of his work.  Take a look at some images after the jump…

Preview: Ron English – “Lazarus Rising” @ Elms Lester

After hanging with Ron English at Dr. Sketchy’s, he invited AM over to his Jersey City studio to check out his upcoming solo show at Elms Lester. The show entitled “Lazarus Rising” is Ron’s first ever UK solo and is his second with Elms Lester. The show opens to the general public May 8th and will run through June 6th. If you’re in London during that time, you should definitely check this one out. Keep your eyes peeled as we’ll post the full studio visit […]

Interviews/Releases: ABOVE

ABOVE, the prolific street artist best known for his wooden arrow mobiles, clever wordplay pieces and most recently, his social and political commentary stencils, has long been putting up work throughout the world that both brings huge smiles and invokes serious contemplation. As long time fans, AM was thrilled to gain further insight into ABOVE’s recent work, thoughts on the economic crisis and his whirlwind journey during his “South Central” tour. To coincide with this interview, ABOVE just released a hand-pulled screen print on his […]
