Openings: James Bullough – “Breaking Point” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, at the same time as Curiot’s immersive showing at Thinkspace Gallery, the Berlin-based James Bullough also presented an all new set of works. Collectively entitled Breaking Point, the new paintings are classic examples of the American artist’s fragmented portraiture. Inspired by “moments in life, good or bad, that hit like a flash, break you down and rearrange your parts, when everything seems to change in an instant,” Bullough’s new pieces feature his levitating characters, rendered with glitchy overlapping segments. Patrick Martinez’s recent works includes what he calls the Po-lice Misconduct Misprint series, a riff on the Pee Chee Folders of the ’70s and ’80s. The paintings evoke a feeling of nostalgia as we think back to our early school days but when examined closely, the viewer realizes that the Los Angeles-based artist has replaced the high school-age students engaged in sports or other activities with images of police brutality and portraits of victims we have all seen in the news. Releases: James Jean – “Melon” Print

Next week, James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new print off his website in a time-limited manner, making it available for 12 hours starting at 8:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 25th and ending at 7:59 PM PDT. Melon was created to celebrate summer and will be sized at 27″ x 20″ (image size 24″ x 18″) with the price set at $200. Showing: Marilyn Minter – “Pretty/Dirty” @ Orange County Museum of Art

Earlier this month, Marilyn Minter opened a new show at the Orange County Museum of Art entitled Pretty/Dirty. The retrospective features over 25 paintings made between 1976 and 2015, three video works, and several photographs that highlight the American artist’s focus on society’s obsession with feminine beauty. Included are her iconic and lush works that focus on various eroticized parts of the female body like the feet, lips, and eyes. The exhibition will be on view through July 10th. Releases: James Jean – “Pomegranate” Print

James Jean (interviewed) recently released woodblock print that he created at the Adachi Institute in Tokyo. The limited edition (run of 50) features a young woman using the red color dripping from a pomegranate as makeup, a beautiful example of the Japan-based artist’s artistic vision and craftsmanship.
