Recap: Clare Rojas – The Inexhaustible Middle” @ Alice Gallery

Alice Gallery in Brussels recently had a solo from Clare Rojas on display entitled The Inexhaustible Middle. Continuing her move to abstraction and color study, the new works from the American artist distill her folk art-like imagery into patterns, geometric shapes, and linear forms in her distinctive palette. Along with presenting her latest works on canvas and paper, Rojas also performed songs in her “folk-bluegrass” style under the pseudonym of singer-songwriter Peggy Honeywell. Photos via Juxtapoz. Lat month, Studio Voltaire in London opened an exhibition from Jamian Juliano-Villani entitled The World’s Greatest Planet on Earth. For her first solo outside the United States at a public institution, the New York-based artist prepared a series of her painted collages featuring appropriated images, personal photographs, and reproductions of existing artworks, reinterpreted into surreal amalgamations with a touch of dark humor. Along with these paintings, some never before exhibited sculptural installations rounded out the show that will be on view until December 11th. Photos via Studio Voltaire. Last night, Jacob Lewis Gallery held the opening reception for their inaugural show with Hajime Sorayama. A few weeks after announcing his representation, the Chelsea-based gallery revealed his newest body of work featuring his signature Sexy Robots. The 10 new acrylic paintings and one sculpture were created around the idea of re-inventing American icons. From Hollywood starlets to pop culture idols (fashion and music stars), the Japanese artist presented his vision of these characters as one of his retro-future pinups. Releases: Chet Zar – “The Meeting” Print

In association with his current DY5TOPIA show at Copro Gallery, Chet Zar (interviewed) has released a new print entitled The Meeting. Based on a painting from the exhibition of the same name, the image shows a group of the Los Angeles-based artist’s creepy characters getting together to discuss some secret objective. Produced in a run of 55, there is an offer to personalize the 19″ x 13″ giclée with a drawing by Zar tomorrow Saturday, October 29, at the gallery if ordered online for $100 before the signing (3-7 pm). Streets: El Mac (Colorado)

Over the summer, El Mac spend some time on a commission mural at the Manitou Art Center, coincidentally also referred to as The MAC in Manitou Springs, Colorado. It was a collaboration (something he often does) with his friend FUSE, who painted some of the graffiti elements for this piece entitled Native Son (This Saint Floyd), a tribute to local artist local artist Floyd Tunson. Previews: 1010 – “Eversion” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Following up on last year’s exhibition (covered) at Hashimoto Contemporary will be another solo from 1010 at the San Francisco gallery starting November 3rd. Eversion continues the Hamburg-based artist’s series of portals, echoing the large-scale works he paints on the streets. The pieces utilizing color theory and perspective are painted on layers of acrylic glass and mounted on aluminum dibond, a technique that augments the illusory effect. Discuss 1010 here.

Tonight in Portland, Antler Gallery will be opening two person show entitled Anthropocene featuring the work of Scott Listfield and Brin Levinson. The title of the exhibition refers to the epoch in Earth’s history where human activity has become the dominant force of change on our planet, something Listfield took to heart as he painted his signature astronaut while thinking about our increasing reliance on technology and decline in the biodiversity on our earth. Starting on October 28th at Jacob Lewis Gallery, the surreal robotic works of Hajime Sorayama will grace the walls of the New York showspace and will open for public consumption. Along with paintings more in line with the Japanese artist’s trademark sexy robot aesthetic like Kate Moss reimagined as an automaton Playboy Bunny, on display will also be popular pop culture icons transformed into their mechanical forms as well as sculptural rendition. Jasper Wong from POW! WOW! recently joined forces with Fred Bidwell from Transformer Station as curatorial team for the INTER|URBAN public arts program 2016. This original project is working on transforming Cleveland’s public transit rail system into a large-scale public art experience. Through artwork that can be enjoyed on their commute, this program seeks to challenge public transit riders emotionally and intellectually, while making physical and cultural connections to their surroundings.
