Streets: Banksy in Basque

With “Exit Through the Gift Shop” premiering in Basque Country at the International Film Festival of San Sebastian, it’s not surprising that Banksy fans were keeping their eyes out for stencils from the elusive street artist. Well, looks like one popped up with a man staring a randomly framed section of a painted wall, probably Mr. B’s poke at abstract art. If the man in this image looks familiar, you may remember him from Toronto. So, all signs point to this as being a Banksy […]

Update: ROA

Check out this newest piece from ROA, who certainly has been very busy recently. Not only is he at the Nuart Festival right now working on one of his largest and most complex piece ever, we also now have word that the Belgium-based artist will be visiting Los Angeles in November for a pop-up show, all courtesy of Thinkspace! Take a look at a more revealing side view of the piece above (located in Madrid) after the jump…

LA Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child

The film we heard first heard whispers of at Art Basel Miami last year is finally ready for its Los Angeles release tonight. Billed as the definitive documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat, “The Radiant Child” (trailer) was filmed by close friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988 after which she stored the footage away for almost 20 years. There will be some special guests for some of the initial screenings, details after the jump…

Highlights: Recommended Openings (Aug 19 – 21)

Bit of a slow weekend as the dog days of August come to an end soon and the art world gears back up for things this coming September. By far, the big event leading the charge is BAST’s return to London at Lazarides. I just saw the preview and BAST has taken things up a notch with hand-painted acrylic works on canvas playing off his mixed-media collage style as well as some beautiful sculptural wall pieces. If in London this week, don’t miss it! More […]

Teaser: “Hope’s Reply” @ LeBasse Projects

Looks like German artistic duo Herakut are scheduled for an exhibition this September at LeBasse Projects.  Entitled “Hope’s Reply”, the show from Hera (interviewed) and Akut, will hopefully feature some of those fantastic sculptural pieces (like at Springmann.Varol) along with their paintings as well as some outdoor work as part of their visit to Los Angeles. Via Nuart. Discuss Herakut here.

Streets: Blu Hits Warsaw

Wow! It looks likes Blu is continuing to go big with his murals. This time the Italian hits up Warsaw with this “war” mural (no pun intended) but also digs a little behind the real motivations of why it happens – look at the puppet strings and the badges with the dollar signs.  Next up for Blu will be Nuart 2010 (The Landmark Series) with other participants including Vhils, ROA, Dolk, Ericailcane, Evol, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Sten & Lex, M-City, and Dotmasters. More detailed shots of […]

Streets: Banksy at the Sundance Festival

Some very interesting developments over in Park City, Utah where the Sundance Film Festival is about to get underway. Apparently, about four new alleged Banksy stencils have popped up, with the one seen above being the best one so far. Adding to the intrigue are the rumors that the “Spotlight Surprise” documentary will actually be about Banksy and entitled “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” the title of a famous piece from his recent Bristol Museum show. What will be revealed? The true identity of Mr. […]

Openings: Swoon & Ben Wolf – “Squinches and Pendentives” @ Urban Art Info

Fresh off their stint from Norway at this year Nuart Festival (covered), Swoon (Interviewed) and Ben Wolf stopped off in Berlin for a show at Urban Art Info Gallery. The show “Squinches and Pendentives” was held in UAI’s large gallery space which allowed the artists to really showcase their styles. The space allowed Ben to build his impressive and self reflective installations/sculptures. Swoon also did her part and effortlessly integrated her always touching figures into Ben’s complex urban-themed installation. It was a fun night as […]

AM had a chance to interview with both Chris and Armsrock, in which they talk about how their individual bodies of work interact with one another, the inspiration for the show and more.
