Upcoming: Edwin Ushiro – “Capturing What Still Glimmers” @ Giant Robot 2

On June 18th, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. Just in time for summer, Capturing What Still Glimmers features nostalgic imagery from the artist’s youth growing up in Hawaii. Utilizing a unique process and technique, the locally-based painter’s work glows with an ethereal translucent quality that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Discuss this show here. Streets: JR @ The Louvre (Part II)

After a first look at a new intervention at the Louvre from JR (interviewed) earlier this week, here are photos of the completed project. Pasting over the iconic pyramid in his signature technique was a time-consuming undertaking, but the impressive result is a testament to the French street artist’s artistic vision. Coming up on June 18th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be opening up a solo show by graffiti legend Futura. Entitled NEW HORIZONS, the exhibition will feature imagery that fans of the street pioneer have come to love – gyroscopes, nebulae, and other abstracted structures as well as some of his pointman characters. Art16 returned to Olympia, London from 19–22 May for the fourth year of this contemporary art fair. More than 100 galleries were brought together from over 30 countries, along with not-for-profit exhibitors and commissioned-artist installations. Earlier this month, a show featuring new charcoal and graphite drawings on paper by Joel Daniel Phillips opened up at San Francisco’s Hashimoto Contemporary. Belongings comprises of mainly four large-scale portraits interesting paired with solitary objects (on similarly shaped paper) that serves as an extension of their characters. Releases: Joao Ruas – “Verso” Book

Back in 2014, Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery successfully hosted a solo show from Joao Ruas entitled Verso (covered). This month, the Brazilian artist released a 64 page hardcover catalogue from the exhibition including a fold out center of his painting Cannae of You and Me. Last month, the Los Angeles Public Library unveiled a new card designed by Shepard Fairey and Cleon Peterson. The first artist-designed, limited-edition library card made available at all 73 locations features an image of the historic Central Library, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2016. Francisco Diaz aka Pastel recently spent some time in Manila, Philippines, participating in the second edition of the LeBasse Projects curated and produced artBGC mural festival, creating one of his largest floral murals to date. Titled Calamansi and Sampaguita, the piece is based on ancient local traditions, depicting the plants that have a local symbolism. Calamansi is a plant used during funerals as way of purify the body, while the national flower, Sampaguita, represents humility and reverence, and it’s the flower that young kids sell on the streets just to survive.
