Openings: “Better Habits” @ Athen B. Gallery

Downtown Oakland was in for a treat last Saturday night. Local artist Lauren Napolitano teamed up with UK’s David Bray and Word To Mother to collaborate on a group exhibition called Better Habits at Athen B. Gallery. Collectively, these three artists’ work compliment each other’s styles so well that at times it was hard to tell who’s who on each piece. Those who follow graffiti & street art will immediately recognize Word to Mother’s work. Napolitano’s work is a lot more folksy with painted found objects, […]

Upcoming: James Bullough – “Breaking Point” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On May 28th, James Bullough will be unveiling new works for his solo at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Breaking Point, the paintings represent four months of work for the Berlin-based artist and feature his signature glitchy fragmented aesthetic of portraiture (which you can see in the cropped images included in this article). The American artist further explains – “Although motion and distortion are the driving aesthetic forces in this body of work, thematically ‘Breaking Point’, as the name suggests, focuses on the moments in […]

After teasing us with a work-in-progress sculpt last year that will bring to life his Bat Bear painting in a three-dimensional form, it looks like Luke Chueh (interviewed) is set to release his latest art toy soon. More accurately named Gero-Hero or Bat-Bear, the acrylic and ink piece from 2006 featured the Los Angeles-based artist’s iconic sad bear disguised as the famous crime fighting mask crusader. Tentatively set to drop in June with the help of Mighty Jaxx, keep your eyes peeled for further information soon to add this […]

For several years now, Peter Ferguson has left his his Canadian homeland to deliver a sold out, or nearly sold out show to the Roq La Rue Gallery.  2016 is no exception and Lifeboats of a Sinking Witch is another journey to the illustrator’s fantastic world. Seemingly painted under twilight, each piece is completed with a vintage frame and several are adored with a title face plate. Discuss Peter Ferguson here.

Mary Mary Gallery in Glasgow is currently showing Honest Espionage, a solo show by Emily Mae Smith. Opened on April 8th and staying on view through May 28th, this is probably most important presentation by the Brooklyn-based artist since her last solo in NYC or being included in Unrealism, organized by Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian during Basel Week Miami 2015 (covered). The exhibition consists of a new oils on linen featuring Smith’s mix of divergent styles and visual elements. Though initially captivating due to their clean, graphic feel, it’s the variety […]
