Showing: Marilyn Minter – “Pretty/Dirty” @ Orange County Museum of Art

Earlier this month, Marilyn Minter opened a new show at the Orange County Museum of Art entitled Pretty/Dirty. The retrospective features over 25 paintings made between 1976 and 2015, three video works, and several photographs that highlight the American artist’s focus on society’s obsession with feminine beauty. Included are her iconic and lush works that focus on various eroticized parts of the female body like the feet, lips, and eyes. The exhibition will be on view through July 10th. Previews: Axel Void – “Nobody” @ Athen B. Gallery

On May 7th, Athen B. Gallery will host a pop-up solo by Axel Void. Titled Nobody, the exhibition will open at 222 Broadway St. in Downtown Oakland at 7pm. The Miami-born artist, whose real name is Alejandro Hugo Dorda Meys has been known for dark, often figurative works that mixes text, classical painting and drawing. Meys also creates large murals on the street, which like his gallery work, regularly addresses social issues and the everyday problems of regular people while pointing out injustice and cruelty. On the 30th of April, Blain|Southern in Berlin officially opened Harland Miller’s show Tonight We Make History (P.S. I Can’t Be There). As previously announced, his first solo in Germany included an all new body of work that incorporate his own designs, as well as a selection of the classic pieces from the infamous Penguin Books series. Fresh from his pop up show Mixité Sociale (covered) in France, prolific artist Gris1 from the DMV crew returns to Zurich for his second solo show entitled Interview at Kolly Gallery. Through his paintings, he gives the viewers insights into his mind and his inspirations, like responding to an interview through his artworks. Andreas Englund – “Coffee Break” @ Grand Central Station (Stockholm)

Last week at Stockholm’s Grand Central Station, a new mural from Andreas Englund took shape on the second floor. Commissioned by No18, a business hotel opening in May, the piece painted on the 8 x 3 meter wall features a scene which includes one of the superhero characters that the Swedish artist is known for. In this case, he’s taking a breather with a cup of coffee after dispatching some bad guys. Discuss Andreas Englund here.
