Studio Visit: Mark Whalen – “Maze Walkers” @ Chalk Horse (Sydney)

Mark Whalen’s new solo show, Maze Walkers, just opened at Chalk Horse in Sydney, Australia. His latest body of work displays his hand-painted gridded environments with some new stylistic directions. Working with themes of geometry, ritual, science, and sport, Whalen’s work continues to increase in complexity in both narrative and composition, but with a focused clarity that is well suited to his signature style. In tune with his recurring theme of modern mythology are some porcelain vessels adorned with his stylized figures in cobalt blue. […]

Openings: Mark Whalen – “Portals” @ Merry Karnowsky

This past weekend, the Merry Karnowsky gallery unveiled new work by artist Mark Whalen (also known as Kill Pixie). Titled “Portals”, this new exhibition by the Australian artist shows a progress in style from the last time he showed at this same gallery.  Last week, we showed you a glimpse into his artistic process via a teaser video (covered), and here with the culmination of his hard work, we see him once again incorporating a collection of extremely detailed and geometric artwork, black on black […]

Videos / Set Up: Mark Whalen – “Portals” @ Merry Karnowsky

Tomorrow night, Mark Whalen (featured) will be unveiling all new works at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. Entitled Portals, the name certainly can be descriptive of the imagery seen in his paintings – strange beings that look like they might have appeared through doorways into another dimension or world. Whalen has come a long way since his days as a Sydney based street artist known as Kill Pixie, and this return to the Los Angeles showspace sees him further explore what we saw from him at last year’s exhibition there […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Mark Whalen @ Melbourne Art Fair

AM dropped by Mark Whalen’s studio recently to get a preview of his new work, which will be shown as a solo exhibition with Edwina Corlette Gallery at the Melbourne Art Fair  (August 1-5). If you can’t make it to the art fair, follow Mark Whalen (nowhaywhay) on Instagram for a play by play of the event. Looking into Mark Whalen’s psychedelic gridded realities is like a mythic journey into hyperspace.  He redefines the atmospheric picture plane, using pure geometric forms and grids to create […]

During the weekend, Launch LA hosted a music video release party that featured an incredible collaboration by artist Mark Whalen and the music group Autolux. We actually got a small teaser of what this video would look like some months ago as Whalen was prepping for his show at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery (covered). […]

Openings: Mark Whalen – “Anomaly” @ Merry Karnowsky

This past Saturday, Mark Whalen debuted his new work, entitled Anomaly, at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery.  The Australian and former graffiti artist showed work which combined an interesting style of characters, design, and colors. As seen during our previous studio and installation visits with the artist, one of the key components with his artwork is the way in which he’s able to fuse certain elements ranging from Eastern culture to themes of a controlled environment. As part of the exhibit, a video installation produced by […]

We were fortunate enough to be able to follow this up with a visit to his studio and document the some of the process as he readies for his September 10th show at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. If that video didn’t blow you away, this visit should at the least give you a great indication of the hard work put forth by the Australian born artist. Whalen, who also goes by […]

Videos / Teaser: Mark Whalen – “Anomaly” @ Merry Karnowksy

Coming up next month, Mark Whalen (aka Kill Pixie) will be unleashing a new body of work for Merry Karnowksy Gallery where he showed last October. Although we’ll be looking forward to seeing the progression of his signature characters in their geometric environs, what blew us away were the animations he has been working on. Talk about next level shit. Also, a preview image after the jump…
