LA Art Show ’16: Recap

Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015). Our coverage will mainly focus on this area, led off by the Jeff Gillette designed entrance inspired by his participation in Banksy’s Dismaland. Photo credit: Birdman Photos.

Currently in Bangkok, the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival has seen a steady stream of street artists arrive to leave their mark on the capital city. One of these is ROA, who is painting across the way from Aryz (more on his mural later), and with his usual practice, choosing to use local creatures as his inspiration. The next artist we want to share with you in our Art Focus series is Benjamin Garcia and his series of textured portraits. The Venezuelan artist’s multi-layered technique is utilized perfectly to render the disjointed transition between the conscious and the unconscious and seems also to reveal some of the inner psyches of his subjects. Streets: Lonac (Zagreb)

Following in the footsteps of innovative artists before him like Blu & INSA, Lonac has created an animated piece in Zagreb, Croatia. Painted by the locally-based artist in a secret location, the detailed heart has blood pumping through (although in the wrong direction). Dan May – “Daily Creature Project”

The Daily Creature Project is a continuing series of studies that Dan May (interviewed) has been creating every day. Each one features one of the surreal, hairy subjects that the northern Michigan-based artist has been known to paint. Upcoming: Marcel Dzama x New York City Ballet

Following collaborations with Dustin Yellin, JR, and Faile, the New York City Ballet will be working with Marcel Dzama on their fourth annual Art Series. The Brooklyn-based artist will be unveiling a Promenade chessboard installation featuring video, drawings, and sculpture as well as designing the sets and costumes for The Most Incredible Thing, which is based on a Hans Christian Anderson story. Releases: Hendrik Beikirch – “Tracing Morocco” Book

The Montresso Foundation recently released a publication that presents a collaboration with Hendrik Beikirch aka ECB entitled Tracing Morocco. This project included an artistic residency at Jardin Rouge a dozen times since June 2014 during which he created 22 portraits that were showin in Zurich, Cologne, Tolouse, Völklinger and finally at the official book launch in Marrakesh in December of 2015. The book features a collection of Beikirch’s portraits of Moroccan men and women.
