Previews: “Charismatic Megafauna” @ Roq La Rue

On Thursday night (December 3rd), Roq La Rue will be opening a new group show entitled Charismatic Megafauna. Artists Adam Doyle, Brad Woodfin, Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Femke Hiemstra, Jacub Gagnon, Jean Pierre Arboleda, Jessica Joslin (seen above), Joey Bates, Josh Keyes, Josie Morway, Justin Beckman, Laurie Hogin, Lindsey Carr, Michael Alm, Peter Ferguson, Peter Gronquist, and Scott Musgrove were asked to contribute a piece that focuses on some of the world’s largest and most spectacular species, and even what appear to be some mythical ones.  

Streets: Ernest Zacharevic x Martha Cooper // #ReplayNYC (New York)

Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic and NYC-based photographer Martha Cooper (interviewed) recently released the info about their collaborative project of six weeks entitled #ReplayNYC on the streets of her hometown. Based on the idea of re-imagining selected pictures from Cooper’s impressive collection of photographs through Zacharevic’s brush, the project includes murals and street art interventions. Basel Week Miami ’15 / Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “Damage Control” @ Bill Brady Gallery

Fresh out of the gates for Basel Week Miami is a showing from Tomoo Gokita with acrylic and gouache on canvas paintings at Bill Brady Gallery’s new permanent space in the Little River District. The new body of work, titled Damage Control, took portraiture painting to another level with works based on vintage portraits of Hollywood divas, movie stills, found photos and postcards. Created with soft gradients, solid black, or even unpainted white space, the Japanese artist’s characters are mostly faceless, giving only subtle suggestions of their basic features. Basel Week Miami ’15: RETNA // Artceleration @ Macaya Gallery

Tonight at the start of Basel Week Miami, Macaya Gallery in the heart of the Wynwood Art District held a special live painting session in conjunction with Hoerle Guggenheim. As one of three participating artists, RETNA (featured) was asked to paint a FERRARI F430 Challenge Car from ANSA Motorcars. Each impressive automobile will be auctioned with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Miami Children’s Health Foundation and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, as well as the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Basel Week Miami ’15 / Releases: Andy Warhol // The Skateroom Decks

On December 2nd, The Skateroom is launching their new collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Along with a special event (RSVP required) and pop-op installation that night at the Delano Hotel in South Beach as part of Basel Week Miami, the series of new skatedecks featuring Warhol’s iconic imagery will be made available online. Through the sales, the company hopes to support NGO Skateistan and their amazing work with children across Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Basel Week Miami ’15 / Previews: Kevin Peterson // Thinkspace @ SCOPE

Along with a couple group shows (covered), Thinkspace will also be hosting mini solos from Kevin Peterson and Alex Yanes at the SCOPE Miami booth. For his part, the Houston-based Peterson has sent a series of paintings to highlight his skills during Basel Week Miami that feature his mix of children, animals, and urban environments.
