POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17 / Showing: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Rounding things out was a showcase for Shok-1 (seen below) and a Homer Simpson x Banksy parody installation by Oak Oak (seen above). This Sunday, POW! WOW! Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. Upcoming: POW! WOW! Hawaii 2017

POW! WOW! Hawaii will be making its return for 2017 with a new roster of artists (international and local) as well as fresh new programming and art shows. In the middle of this month, POW! WOW! Japan invited in a roster of artists including Persue, Push (seen above), Sam Rodriguez, Cinta Vidal, John “Prime” Hina, Kami and Sasu of Hitotzuki, Ryuichi Ogino, Jun Inoue and Kensuke Takahashi to Kobe, Japan to create murals on Rokko Island. Following up a successful inaugural event (covered) last year in Tokyo, POW! WOW! Japan is back with the 2016 (October 17-22) edition in a new location. A couple weeks ago, POW! WOW! Worcester welcomed in artists from 8 different countries as well as locally from Massachusetts. In association with the event, there were gallery shows and other activities, but the main draw was the live painting (like in other POW! WOW! events around the world).
