Recap: POW! WOW! Hawaii 2018

A couple months ago, the 2018 edition of the POW! WOW! Hawaii was held on the island of Oahu, a week long annual event that celebrates culture, music and art. As always, the focus for us is the action that happens on the streets of Kaka’ako as local and international artists gather to paint live murals. With this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii fast approaching, it’s time to preview the annual associated Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2017 & 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Returning to its home base after associated events last year in Washington D.C., Israel, California (Long Beach & San Jose), Worcester (Massachusetts), Guam, Seoul, Kobe, and Taiwan, the POW! WOW! crew will be kicking off the new year in Hawaii with the main festival from February 10th to 18th. Recap: POW! WOW! Korea 2017

At the end of September, the people behind POW! WOW! Hawaii held their event celebrating culture, music and art in a new country – South Korea. Recap: POW! WOW! DC 2017

The Washington D.C. edition of POW! WOW! recently returned in 2017 with another 15 artists creating murals in the NoMa district. Local artists CHELOVE, JD Deardourff, Jordann Wine, Julia Chon, Key Han, Martin Swift, Mas Paz, and Matt Corrado joined artists traveling from afar – Kaplan Bunce (Hawaii), Madsteez (California), STASH (Brooklyn) – seen above, TRAV (California), It’s a Living (Mexico), Muro (Spain), and Qbic (Russia) in painting walls in the neighborhood at a number of locations such as the Metropolitan Branch Trail and the new AVA apartment building at 55 M Street NE. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17: James Jean

Amidst all of the street art during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, one of the more unique elements of the event that could be observed were the portrait sessions with James Jean (interviewed). Featuring a diverse selection of subjects, the six chosen ones sat for a few hours with the gifted artist as he masterfully captured their visages in a series of loose yet detailed paintings. After showing you some in-progress shots and some sneak peeks of the massive amount of work in progress on the streets of Kakaako, we now have a recap of many of the walls and public interventions that were created for POW! WOW! Hawaii. This year’s event had locations that were more compact and centrally located, leading to a more easily navigated set of murals. Continued good weather made for good painting conditions (albeit a little on the sunnier side) as POW! WOW! Hawaii draws closer to conclusion.
