Previews: Stephanie Buer – ‘Inhabitants’ @ Hellion Gallery

Opening next month at Hellion Gallery is Inhabitants – a two person show featuring the work of Portland based artists JShea & Stephanie Buer. We’ve been following Stephanie Buer’s work since we first came across it a couple of years ago. Her depictions of abandoned buildings and graffiti strewn environments are exquisitely captured in both her graphite and oil work. Neglected spaces are reclaimed by nature through dereliction and by the hand of humans through vandalism, and the majority of Stephanie’s subject matter comes from her previous residency in Detroit, […]

Korean artist Yu Jinyoung (interviewed) recently opened her first solo show in Italy at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan. On Wednesday, September 18th, local art lovers were introduced to the wonderful fragile creations of this talented artist through her new show titled I Am OK. The exhibition features six sculptures from the series A family in disguise, seven works from the new series Wounded, as well as photographs oh the works taken by the artist herself, authentic process studies, and sketches of the exhibited sculptures. Focused on feelings of isolation and insecurity […]

Structures: Boris “Delta” Tellegen (Netherlands) – Part I

For those familiar with his work, the pieces from Boris “Delta” Tellegen, whether on the streets or in galleries, are very structural in nature. Interestingly, he has taken the architectural elements to his craft and applied them to the facade of a building in Harleem in the Netherlands. Commissioned by Ymere, a social housing company, the new housing block will feature Tellegen’s special post-graffiti aesthetic in the form of the pattern and shape of brickwork and windows on its surface. Take a look at the plans and […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Sail – “Dead Language” @ Roq La Rue

This author had the pleasure of interviewing Sail in 2012 for his personal blog, but a lot has changed for the Seattle based artist since then. Shortly after his personal website launched in late 2012, he caught the eye of Kirsten Anderson, owner and curator of Roq la Rue. He soon found his name on the artist list for the I’ll Love You Until the End of the World group show. His work was well received, and after ThreeA Publishing released his book in their GOYA series, […]

Studio Visit: Jocelyn Duke

A few weeks back, AM had a chance to visit with painter Jocelyn Duke in her Los Angeles studio. Coming off of back to back shows in Portland, Oregon (solo titled Brain Candy at the Sum Gallery and a group exhibition titled Wider than a Postcard at the Breeze Block Gallery), she was busy catching up on commissions and enjoying some time back home in the studio. She describes her work as Pop Organic Geometry, or POG for short. Jocelyn explains that her collective body of work consists of repetition of patterns, […]

Previews: Moneyless ‘ALEA IACTA EST’ @ 999 Contemporary, Rome

Italian artist Moneyless aka Teo Pirisi opens his first solo exhibition of 2013 on home turf at Rome’s 999 Contemporary Gallery. Entitled ALEA IACTA EST, the translation for those non-fluent in Latin is ‘The Die Has Been Cast’. A bold statement, but Moneyless’ art provides affirmation of his voice within the contemporary art scene. The fluidity of his work is wonderful, and a joy to view up close and personal. Spirographic patterns blend colour and form on beautifully crafted wooden panels. Delicate ink and acrylic washes reveal […]

Previews: Casey Gray – ‘Tropic’ @ White Walls

Bay Area artist Casey Gray is set to open his third solo exhibition with SF gallery White Walls on October 12th. The show is entitled Tropic, and  looks to be packed with imagery that conjures up the scent of pina coladas and coconut oil. We’ve watched Casey’s work develop over the last few years and these boldly composed still life stencils look to be executed with a new level of mastery of his chosen technique. Definitely one to catch if you are in the Bay Area.

Studio Visits: Faile @ Dallas Contemporary

The anticipation has been building in the art community on Faile’s upcoming exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary. The New York based duo of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have been working non-stop since their incredible project with the New York City Ballet  for this trip to Texas. AM recently stop by their Brooklyn studio to take in some of their creative overflow. It was impressive to see some of the multimedia installations, large-scale paintings and sculptures they’ve got up their sleeves for this museum exhibition. We also got a […]
