The curated selection provided a valuable look at what […]

Streets: Spencer Tunick (Munich Opera Festival)

American photographer Spencer Tunick, known for organizing large-scale public nude photoshoots, has struck again – this time in Germany. The human installation created from 1,700 individuals marked the start of Munich’s 2012 opera season by gathering in formations recalling scenes from Richard Wagner’s opera Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). Painted in red or gold, the participants were part of a project commissioned by the Bavarian State Opera. Photo credit: Bayerische Staatsoper thru Designboom.

Openings: Tom Sachs – “Space Mission Mars” @ Park Avenue Armory

Artist Tom Sachs is famous for his D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) artistic sculptures where he recreates various modern icons and feats of engineering as seen in his most recent show at Sperone Westwater. With his most recent public art project, he showcases another dimension of his craftsmanship by demonstrating how his creative artwork actually works as intended. Streets: Rafael Barrios (New York)

For those who haven’t seen them yet, you have until June 30th to check out nine visually intriguing sculptures from Venezuelan-American artist Rafael Barrios in New York. Featured in the Park Avenue Malls between 50th and 68th Streets, the slender works play like an optical illusion and almost appear like digital effects when seen in photos. The public showing that started during Armory Week was put together by Parks & Recreation, The Fund for Park Avenue, and the Art Nouveau Gallery. Other artists who have exhibited in the same […]

Upcoming: Travis Louie – “Spirits” @ Stranger Factory

Continuing to spread his strange creatures and special form of surreal vintage portraiture to unlikely locales, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) next solo will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We last covered the NY-based painter’s showing in Northampton, Massachusetts at William Baczek Fine Arts back in May, and now it looks like his black and white cast of bizarre characters will be headlining a show at the Stranger Factory in August entitled Spirits. We’ll have more for you as the show draws nearer. Discuss Travis Louie here.

Upcoming: Jeremy Fish – “Where Hearts Get Left” @ Fifty24SF

The last time we saw Jeremy Fish (featured) it was in Los Angeles for his show (covered) at the Mark Moore Gallery at the end of 2011. Since then, he has been hard at work getting ready for his solo in his adopted city of San Francisco at Fifty24SF entitled Where Hearts Get Left set to open on July 14th. He describes it as a “visual love letter” with new artwork and a book project inspired by “The City That Knows How,” an old nickname for San […]

Hong Kong’s 10 Chancery Lane is recently collaborated with Tokyo’s Mizuma Art for the first solo HK exhibition by Ai Yamaguchi. The show, entitled Ashita Mata (Again Tomorrow), consists of a varied body of work including prints, murals and an amazing large-scale installation composed of many individual paintings. Yamaguchi seems to be continually expanding artistically through the use of these different mediums and configurations while all the time remaining true to her longtime imagery of beautiful and young edo-period courtesans.

Streets: Eduardo Kobra (New York)

Featured as our Art Focus artist back in May (here), Sao Paulo-based street artist Eduardo Kobra has traveled to New York City for a mural project. The two-level public art piece features his remix of the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph from the V-J celebrations in Times Square marking the end of U.S. hostilities with Japan. This new wall from the Brazilian painter can be seen from the High Line so we suggest those those in New York who are interested should take a stroll to […]
