After a recent foray into the town of Grottaglie in Italy to kick off the FAME Festival with a series of impressive murals, Conor Harrington (interviewed) returns to the UK and promptly works on another large scale wall with his usual referencing of colonial imagery. The new work, created in his distinctive combination of abstract and photorealistic rendering, is located on Whitecross Street in London and is entitled Gonna Take My Problems to the United Nations. Openings: David Cooley – “Dashing In Headlong” @ Thinkspace

A couple weeks ago, the Thinkspace Gallery introduced work from new artist David Cooley collectively entitled Dashing In Headlong. The Santa Barbara-based painter’s fresh patterns and imagery caught our eyes, but his unusual technique had us scratching our heads. A little research showed that he starts by sourcing print materials / fabric and then mounting them to wood panel. Then, after a layer of resin he creates the base pattern & lays multiple layers down and folows this by using a dental type instrument to create […]

Upcoming: Eric Fortune – “A Life to Leave” @ Lebasse Projects (Culver City)

Coming up next month on the 14th, the Culver City location of the Lebasse Projects will be hosting a solo show from Eric Fortune (interviewed). Last we saw of the Ohio-based painter, it was the end of 2010 and he was showing at the same space alongside Nate Frizzell. The new body of work deals with characters in transition between the known and the unknown, all rendered with his time-consuming “glazing” technique infusing each piece with subtle details and luminous lighting. Discuss this show here. […]

Another weekend, another Rewind feature here on AM. Leading off our summary of videos this week is the inspiring story (from The Guardian) of Syrian cartoonist Ali Farzat, who founded Syria’s first satirical weekly, Ad Domani. In August 2011, he was attacked by Bashar al-Assad’s militia who broke his hands to stop him from drawing Assad. Farzat was later awarded the European parliament Sakharov prize for freedom of thought. Olek sells cellphones to pay her legal bills (via Hyperallergic). Art Focus: Frieke Janssen

This week’s Art Focus is on Belgian photographer Frieke Janssen. Among her many projects, one in particular is titled simply Smoking Kids, which was inspired after seeing a YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler. She states “The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer’s focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal […]
