Openings: Sea No Evil Charity Art Show 2009

Last night, things got hot in the IE with a jam packed show in Riverside benefiting the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. “Sea No Evil” (previewed) featured a even stronger lineup of artists this year contributing originals and prints to the charity for auction. With the price set low on each piece, most collectors walked away with bargains as well as a nice tax deduction. With DJ Diabetic (Shepard Fairey) on the ones and twos and a speech by Paul Watson (founder of Sea Sheperd and […]

Preview: Philip Lumbang – “Hug Life” (Warehouse Pop-Up Show)

Last time we caught up with Philip Lumbang, he was on his hands and knees detailing stencils and collages in preparation for Shepard Fairey’s ICA Retrospective. The Studio Number One and Obey Giant studio assistant is coming into his own recently. Known for his unique play on colors and silhouettes on found mediums, we’re excited to see what this show has in store for the young artist. Phil is also featured on the cover of this month’s Giant Robot magazine. On Saturday, September 12th, Phil is transforming […]

Showing: Steinbrener & Dempf – “Trouble in Paradise” @ Schönbrunn Zoo (Austria)

An interesting exhibition opened in June at the Schönbrunn Zoo in Austria entitled “Trouble in Paradise.” Artist duo Christoph Steinbrener and Rainer Dempf created a series of six artistic interventions dealing with the idea of nature versus civilization, themes we know well from following artists such as Banksy, Josh Keyes, and Shepard Fairey, to name a few. However, to bring the art directly into a controlled “natural” environment like the zoo is pretty genius. Examples include railroad tracks in the bison pen, a sunken car […]

Time Magazine: Top 10 Guerrilla Artists

Who says street art has no cred with the mainstream? Kinda saying a lot when one of the most respected publications in the world takes the time to break out a “Top Ten” list of the top “Guerrilla Artists.” The usual suspects – Jean-Michel Basquiat, Shepard Fairey and Banksy are there. But, we’re surprised that Kaws and his infamous phone booth/bus stop “Ad-Disruptions” didn’t make the list. Check out who did and didn’t made the cut here. Via our friends at TWBE.

Openings: Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG x Nike Stages Exhibition @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

Lance Armstrong and Nike Sportswear’s “Stages” exhibition (previewed here and here) opened up with an amazing roster of artists. As Geoff McFetridge put it, “It’s a veritable ‘A-Team’ of top artists from all walks of the art world.” With names such as Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Eric White, Christopher Wool, Shepard Fairey, Kaws, Cai Guo-Qiang, Yoshitomo Nara, Jose Parla, Richard Prince and Raymond Pettibon to name a few, it was quite a feat to put together this team of prominent artists who banded together for a […]
