Streets: El Mac – “Spirit of Summer” (Canada)

As summer is drawing to an end, AM thought we would draw attention to this mural from Los Angeles-based El Mac, who recently visited one of his favorite cities, Montreal, Canada. Entitled Spirit of Summer, this piece is an interpretation of a young Rose Phillips, the namesake of the neighborhood this is in, Rosemont. As you saw in our London Instagram Roundup last week, Phlegm was in London recently and painted some of the walls of the Foundry Building on Old Street with his signature characters. It looks like the Sheffield-based street muralist hasn’t finished with Shoreditch yet as he recently added this airship piece at the Zetland House to the long list of fantastical vessels he’s painted in the past, although this time he’s taking to the skies instead of to the water. On Thursday, September 22nd, David Shrigley will be at WORD Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY to celebrate the launch of WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? The evening will include a talk, book signing and sharpie tattoos by the Glasgow-based artist. East River Tattoo will also be on hand to permanently ink Shrigley drawings onto his most serious fans, a ballsy act amongst diehard fans last seen during the Frieze 2010 Art Fair. This past Saturday, LeBasse Projects in Culver City debuted Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) new solo exhibition. Entitled Picking Up Where We Left Off, this most recent work by the L.A.-based artist continues to show a great sense of artistry that he’s been building upon during the last few years. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction and exhibition entitled RE:DEFINE to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus. Curators for the event, The Future Tense, have put together a diverse roster of 30 artists (full list here) including Shepard Fairey, Katrin Fridriks, Polly Morgan, D*Face, Haroshi, Brian Adam Douglas (Elbow-Toe), Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Dan Witz, Faile, James Marshall (Dalek) with Ben Eine scheduled for a large-scale public installation. We’ve already shown you the walls that Blu and Ethos painted for the CityLeaks Festival in Germany, but it looks like it’s time for a summary of some of the rest of the participants. As we have become accustomed to, street artists Faith47 and DAL worked on murals with religious overtones and frenetic energy respectively. Belgium-based ROA brought his new skinned animal concepts from indoors to outdoors. Just several hours ago, the Honor Fraser gallery finally unveiled the latest works by New York-based artist KAWS. This show, Hold The Line, marks his second return to the gallery (see 2009) and the artwork on display was more than enough to warrant the attention and interest this show had been garnering ever since it was first announced.
