Take a look at more of Murphy’s stunning 3D work here, including the Chuck Close portrait he […]

Obama chooses modern art for the White House

Soon after Barack Obama took office, a rumor began flying around the art world that the president and first lady were planning to redecorate their personal living space within the White House with works of modern and contemporary art. Apparently, a little known perk of being President of the United States is that you get to use the Smithsonian, National Gallery and other DC museums as your personal collection. This week, the list of pieces that the Obamas will be borrowing was announced, and it […]

Studio Visits: Shepard Fairey – “Obama Campaign”

In anticipation of Shepard Fairey’s upcoming retrospective at the Andy Warhol Musueum in October, we thought it would be appropriate to dip into our vault and give you a little gem we’ve been saving for the perfect time. Last November, AM had the pleasure of visiting Shepard Fairey’s Obey/Studio Number One/Subliminal Projects headquarters in Los Angeles a few days after Barack Obama won the presidential election. You would think that Shepard and his crew would be taking a breather and enjoying the fruits of their […]

Rolling Stone’s Obama Cover by Shepard Fairey

The August 20th issue of Rolling Stone will feature a cover with a new image of Barack Obama by Shepard Fairey.  Unlike the idealistic iconic image that a nation of Obama supporters fell in love with, the latest by Fairey incorporates elements that show the situation that the President is currently in. As the artist puts it: “it’s one thing to be running for president and it’s another to be President, and I think this new illustration that I did hopefully captures the complexity and […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Hope” @ Smithsonian: National Portrait Gallery

The Smithsonian Institution has always been considered one of most prestigious museums in the world. It houses some amazing works including the “Portraits of America’s Presidents.” So, what’s a more fitting way to kick off the inauguration weekend than with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiling and inducting Shepard Fairey’s symbolic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. (previously announced here.) AM was invited to come along all-access and document the historic unveiling ceremony. The elegant brunch reception in the Smithsonian courtyard preceded the unveiling as Shepard mingled with the “who’s who” that […]

Shepard Fairey’s “Hope” – Smithsonian: National Portrait Gallery

Probably the most ubiquitous and iconic image from President-elect Barack Obama’s election campaign enters into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian at the National Portrait Gallery. Appropriately, they plan to hang it up on inauguration day. The purchase was made possible through the generosity of Heather and Tony Podesta who donated money to acquire the art work.  Congrats Shepard. Keep it locked here, as AM will be on hand to cover the inauguration, Manifest Hope, and all the related festivities. Via UsaToday Discuss Shepard Fairey […]

Get ready Washington D.C., because January is going to be a busy month. Sure, the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama is the big event. After a momentous “hit and run” show in Denver during the week of the Democratic National Convention, the Manifest Hope Gallery will be making an appearance in Washington before the inauguration (Jan. 17th – 19th). The event will again highlight the artists behind the grass roots movement that helped propel […]
