On January 11th, Urban Spree Galerie in Berlin will be hosting the opening of Futura: The 5 Elements. Starting April of next year in Berlin, the artwork of Osgemeos will be part of an reinterpretation of Pictures at an Exhibition, Russian composer Modest Mussorksy’s most famous creation. Dovetailing nicely with the artistic duo’s love for hiphop culture, breakdance crew Flying Steps will be bringing the music to life with their choreography with OsG’s imagery as the backdrop. As you can see from the photos and video below, the Brazilian brothers went big with their stage design – something their fans will be sure to love […]
Tomorrow night (June 9th), a new exhibition from Emily Mae Smith opens to the public at Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin. Entitled Feast of Totems, the show is well named as it features the re-occurring imagery of fruits, droplets, tongues, lips, and teeth that signal a grotesque consumption running through the new body of work. Also seen in multiple paintings is one of the Brooklyn-based artist’s most recognizable motifs, the totemic broom lady posed in familiar positions that harken back to classic paintings in art history. Utilizing a flat […]
On June 23rd, Circle Culture’s Berlin branch will be opening an exhibition with Kevin Earl Taylor, his third with the gallery. Entitled Apex, the new body of work features paintings, works on paper and site-specific installations that seem to explore some the environmental issues facing our world today. Much of the San Francisco-based artist’s imagery documents moments of encounter between different species of the natural world, separated by constructs like glass spheres and pedestals. At the opening reception, author Carl von Siemens will be presenting his book Der […]
Spending a week together in Berlin, Telmo Miel and James Bullough worked on a stunning new piece (located Bernburger Straße 35) that blends the work of the street artists together perfectly. Painting the large wall for the Berlin Mural Fest with the “Unity” concept proposed by Urban Nation in mind, the Dutch duo mixed their patchy & segmented imagery with the locally-based Bullough’s glitchy portraiture in a way the matches their styles up amazingly well. Take a look are more photos below… Discuss Telmo Miel here. Discuss James Bullough here.
Continuing her ongoing efforts to create conceptual works that reflect her firm beliefs regarding the relationship between humans and nature, Katrin Fridriks will be opening a new solo show titled WASTE on the 26th of April at Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin. The event will be part of Icelandic embassy’s program on the 100th anniversary of sovereignty, and will be inaugurated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland: Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson. Taking a step away from her vibrant abstract canvases, Fridriks is nowadays using her recognizable visual […]
After a successful show in Detroit (covered), Faile (featured) has turned their attention to their next project. Entitled Stages, the new exhibition opening on December 2nd at Galerie Springmann in Berlin will feature some more painterly and graffiti-laced works as well as some of the Brooklyn-based duo’s puzzle-based works. Judging from some of the photos of the Patricks working, there will be some large-scale pieces as well. Discuss Faile here. Discuss this show here.
Elian Chali currently has a solo show on display at BC Gallery in Berlin where he is presenting his latest body of abstract work. With these new pieces, the Argentinian artist is exploring the limitations and possibilities of minimalism by playing with formats, shapes, vivid colors and even the method of presenting his work. With Molestia, Chali has set strict limitations for his practice and work process, taking the minimalist approach to new heights. Mixing organic and geo-based shapes with vibrant primarily colors, and playing with multiple […]
The official opening of the Urban Nation Museum this weekend in Berlin turned the entire area into an open-air art gallery with an extensive program that included performances, workshops, show acts and more. For this event, the organizers managed to shut a section of the bustling Bülowstrasse and turn it into an art venue called Art Mile. This part of the museum inauguration included the most exceptional works that the curators and artists produced for the Berlin’s latest art institution. Beneficial both for the museum as well as the artists, this initiative allowed […]
Urban Nation in Berlin recently teamed up with Juxtapoz Magazine, and its editor Evan Pricco, to curate their latest edition of PM/events. What In the World: The Juxtapoz Edition is the title of the group show that opened on May 19th, further introducing the wide range of urban art that this upcoming museum will be showing and supporting. The idea of this vibrant exhibition was to present the non-existence of boundaries in this lively art movement, through work by mostly Europe-based artists. Not defined as graffiti, […]
