Installations: Ai Weiwei (Berlin, Prague)

Ever since Ai Weiwei moved to Berlin after Chinese authorities returned his passport in 2015, he’s been actively working towards raising awareness about the refugee crisis that is hitting Europe. After reporting from and opening a studio on the Greek island of Lesbos, closing down his exhibition in Copenhagen in protest at a new law that allows Danish authorities to seize valuables from asylum seekers, China’s most acclaimed contemporary artist got the world’s attention once again with his recent interventions. He recently opened his world touring Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads […]

As we previously reported, BC Gallery in Berlin is currently hosting a solo by Jan Kalab (interviewed) which features a new series of round canvases and a large sculptural piece. Here is the followup with photos from the exhibition entitled Tension, which will stay on view until the 23rd of January. These minimalist pieces that experiment with the border line between geometrically perfect and organically unpredictable have been getting […]

Streets: Aaron Li Hill – “Rise and Fall” (Berlin)

Recently in Berlin, Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) finished up a sweet mural for the One Wall Project organized by Urban Nation. Entitled Rise and Fall, the new piece takes inspiration from the greek goddess of victory as well as the film Wings of Desire, both sourced from the background of the capital city. Navigating 24 windows on the facade of the building measuring five stories high, the wall painted ended up being Li-Hill’s largest one to date. The American artist further explains these fallen angels – “Based on two source points, […]

Showing: Axel Void – “Sehnsucht” @ BC Gallery

Currently at BC Gallery in Berlin, Axel Void has a series of provocative works on display entitled Sehnsucht. The solo show from the Miami-based artist consists mainly of small and large paintings featuring portraits of people with plastic wrapped around their heads as well as some videos (sample here). The idea of the exhibition is to explore the idea of mundanity and the pursuit of purpose in our life, also referenced by the title of the show which comes from the German noun translated as longing, yearning, or craving or in a wider sense […]

Upcoming: Axel Void – “Sehnsucht” @ BC Gallery

Next Thursday, July 16th, BC Gallery in Berlin will be opening a solo show from Axel Void entitled Sehnsucht. The collective name of the new series of paintings and videos by the Miami-based artist comes from the German noun translated as longing, yearning, or craving or in a wider sense a type of “intensely missing” but is more complex than simply those terms. Seeing as the term is used in psychology, it’s certainly appropriate when referenced with Void’s provocative imagery, which features a dark tone which is not […]
