With Chinese New Year coming up on Monday, interTrend in Long Beach has teamed up with James Jean (interviewed) for an interactive installation to celebrate the occasion. The project centers around the red envelopes given out around the holidays by families for good luck. In this case, they have been secured to the front of the company’s building (228 E. Tomorrow (February 7th) will mark the third time Thinkspace has curated a show in association with POW! WOW! Hawaii at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (see 2015 & 2014). Today at the Hudson River Museum, sculptor Thomas Doyle is opening a new show entitled If The Creek Don’t Rise. The first museum solo for the Westchester County-based artist will feature more of his signature miniatures that center on the suburban home and the families that occupy them, often threatened by chaos and calamity – known and unknown. Last month, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City kicked off the new art year with Linnea Strid as one of the featured artists. Love Me When I’m Gone filled the project room space with the Swedish artist’s hyperrealistic paintings, portraiture accented by the subjects interaction with water whether that be submerged or enjoying a shower. Ai Weiwei Poses As Drowned Syrian Child Alan Kurdi

The disturbing photo of the Syrian child Alan Kurdi laying drowned on the beach has become an a rallying point for those concerned about the refugee crisis. Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei recently posed as the boy for a photograph shot by Rohit Chawla for an upcoming issue of one of India’s largest news publications – India Today. Last weekend in Tokyo, renowned creator of the “sexy robot” Hajime Sorayama opened a solo show at NANZUKA Gallery. On March 20th, Jonathan Yeo will be unveiling a series of portraits he has been working on with Cara Delevingne at Denmark’s Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Copenhagen. LA Art Show ’16: Recap

Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015).
