Streets: Urban Nation / Project M/8 – (Part II) – Maya Hayuk

After sharing the first set of photos from Urban Nation for the 8th phase (curated by StolenSpace) of their public arts program featuring Shepard Fairey, D*Face, Cyrcle., and Word To Mother painting four columns of a building, we now turn our attention to Maya Hayuk. For her part, the American artist worked amongst other murals painted before for the project, leaving her signature nterlocked stripes of color for her fans in Berlin to enjoy. POW! WOW! Long Beach ’15: James Jean

Over the weekend, James Jean (interviewed) completed one of his tallest murals yet for POW! WOW! Long Beach (see our coverage here). Painted on the side of the historic Varden Hotel in the heart of downtown, the striking black and white mural was placed next to a wall by Tristan Eaton (more on this later). Takashi Murakami x Vans Vault Showcase @ Hotel Du Grand Veneur

Over the weekend Hotel Du Grand Veneur in Paris hosted a collaborative showcase between Takashi Murakami and Vans. Coinciding with this season’s Paris Fashion Week, the launch event featured shoes (adult and child), skate decks, surf boards, tees, and related artwork. as well as a roundtable conversation with the esteemed Japanese artist. Showing: John Knuth – “Nothing Without Providence” @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may remember awhile back, we shared a video from artist John Knuth and his unique form of markmaking. By feeding houseflies pigments and then allowing them to run through part of their life cycles on canvas on site at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, the Los Angeles-based artist was able to create some abstract paintings through his little assistants’ labor. Nothing Without Providence, a reference to the Colorado state motto, runs through July 10th.

Previews: Jonathan Yeo – “Exposure” @ Circle Culture Gallery

Opening on the 10th of July, Exposure will be Jonathan Yeo’s second show with Circle Culture Gallery and the first time he is showing works in Hamburg. The exhibition will primarily consist of his infamous Leaf Works, created using the artist’s distinctive form of pornographic collage. Yeo started the this series in 2008, displaying them in New York and Los Angeles, but this show will be the first, and possibly the last time these pieces are shown together as a coherent body of work. Just closing over the weekend at the SFAQ [Project] Space, the gallery space of the magazine, was a show entitled Highlights From Past SFAQ [Projects] 2012–2015. The title of the exhibition speaks for itself – artists who have collaborated with the publication before on pullouts or inserts have these projects on display along with an artwork that corresponds to it. Openings: Jeff Soto – “Nightgardens” @ KP Projects / MKG

Over the weekend, fans of Jeff Soto (interviewed) enjoyed his first showing in Los Angeles in almost a decade. Entitled Nightgardens, the exhibition of KP Projects / MKG featured a series of new acrylic on panel and watercolor paintings incorporating some of the Riverside-based artist’s familiar characters in the midst of some adventure as well as some more abstract still-life like compositions.
