Previews: PULSE Los Angeles ’11 – David B. Smith

After previewing three booths (here, here, and here) that we are looking forward to later today at the PULSE art fair, we have one final suggestion for those attending. Head over to check out the offerings from David B. Smith as he will be bringing works from Kris Lewis, Gregory Euclide, and Paul Jacobsen. The expressive new works from Lewis, unique three-dimensional paintings from Euclide, and hyper-realistic renderings from Jacobsen should round out your fair-going experience nicely. More preview images after the jump…

Teaser: Ron English – “Seasons in Supurbia” & “English 101” @ Corey Helford & Post No Bills

This November, gifted painter Ron English (featured) will be bringing a new body of work to the Corey Helford Gallery. Entitled Seasons in Supurbia, the NY-based artist will be certain to bring his brand of witty and pop-influenced aesthetic for the fans in the greater LA area to enjoy. For those in the area, if you missed his show (covered) last year in Orange County, here’s your chance to see his incredibly detailed works in person. And for those who can’t wait, the prolific artist […]

Tauba Auerbach Keynote Speaker @ The NY Art Book Fair (Queens)

The NY Art Book Fair is set to kick off tomorrow, September 30th running through October 3rd. Generously organized again by non-profit Printed Matter, the sixth iteration of the free and open to the public event will see more than 200 exhibitors, cementing itself as the world’s premier event for artists’ books, contemporary art catalogs and monographs, art periodicals, and artist zines. The gravity defying architecture of MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens is reason enough to attend. However, as an even greater incentive this […]

Openings: “Ultrasonic VI: Appropriate” – Mark Moore Gallery

LA’s Mark Moore Gallery recently opened their sixth annual Ultrasonic show, surveying emerging and mid-career artists. For this installment, the gallery tapped six artists – Theodora Allen, Sebastiaan Bremer, Alika Cooper, Mark Mulroney, Okay Mountain and Andrew Schoultz – whose work falls under the theme of appropriation. Texas artist collective Okay Mountain, who won the Pulse Prize at Pulse Miami in 2009 for their Corner Store installation, created a 12′ diameter white and grey wheel of fortune, similar to the one from the popular game […]

Releases: Jeremy Geddes – “Warmer Air” Print

In what may tragically be the last Cosmonaut series work ever, at least according to the Australian artist himself, Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) has just completed a highly detailed, yet surprisingly small (14.5″ x 22.8″) painting, entitled Warmer Air. While perhaps not as intricate or refined as his larger works, the “small and fast” painting has some of the finest brushwork ever by Jem’s own standards. The painting blends his affinity for cinematic-esque compositions, with a deft sense of lighting, meticulously rendered architectural landmarks, and an […]

Openings: David LaChapelle – “Negative Currency” & “Recollections in America” @ PRISM

David LaChapelle is a chameleon when it comes to his work. Over the course of his storied career, the New York photographer has experimented with, and excelled in, nearly ever photographic style and technique imaginable. His wide arcing narrative couldn’t be more evident than with his most recent exhibition at PRISM, which opened last night at the swanky Los Angeles gallery. Pairing two bodies of work – Negative Currency and Recollections in America – as different in look and feel as they are similar in […]

Previews: PULSE Los Angeles ’11 – Nate Frizzell @ LeBasse Projects

Continuing our coverage of the inaugural PULSE Los Angeles set to jump off this coming weekend, we now bring your some preview images from Nate Frizzell (interviewed). Whereas his last solo To Become Myself saw Nate exclusively flex his muscle with charcoal, a compelling first time departure for the young artist, he now returns to the oils paintings that got people really talking during his I Should Know Who I Am By Now around this time last year. After four consecutive sold out exhibitions with […]

Openings: Steve Powers / Barry McGee / Todd James – “Contemporaries” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida (Milan)

A couple weeks ago, Patricia Armocida Gallery opened a group show curated by Steve Powers (aka ESPO) at their Milan location. For Contemporaries, the venerable Philadelphia-based street artist hand selected ten artists from both the East and West Coasts of the United States, balancing the artistic dialogue between the old school and the new school generations. Of course, taking center stage were Barry McGee (aka TWIST), Todd James (aka REAS), and ESPO himself, the trio being longtime friends and collaborators perhaps best known for their […]

Showing: Roy Lichtenstein – “Entablatures” @ Paula Cooper Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Paula Cooper Gallery opened a rare exhibition of works by Roy Lichtenstein from his celebrated Entablatures series.  Serving as a departure from the signature spotted, comic-inspired pop art he carved his artistic niche upon in the early 1960’s, the paintings are based around the subject of “entablatures”; ornamental features found on classical building facades. In the early 1970’s he found inspiration for the series both in Greek and Roman examples sourced from architectural journals, but also from photographs he took of […]
