Openings: Aaron Nagel – “A Thin Line” @ Shooting Gallery

Saturday night in San Francisco, the Shooting Gallery hosted a new collection of paintings from Aaron Nagel. It has been over a year since Nagel’s photorealistic renderings have graced the walls of the Tenderloin district showspace, and he returns with A Thin Line, a classical study on the beauty of the female form with a contemporary twist. Kaws x The Standard – “Passing Through” Companion Party

Earlier in the week, we watched Kaws’ iconic Passing Through Companion touch down in the front yard of The Standard Hotel after its little tour of Hong Kong and Connecticut. This unveiling of Kaws’ first major public art installation in NYC was cause for celebration and the hotel hosted a party at their exclusive Boom Boom Room. Several nights ago, AM attended the opening of FriendsWithYou’s “:)” show at the new location of The Hole Gallery. Neither the sweltering heat nor the torrential downpours from the flash thunderstorms could keep the masses of fans away that packed the house to see the first ever New York solo exhibition from the colorful Miami duo Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III who combine their collective happy vibes to form FWY. Openings: FriendsWithYou – “Rainbow City” @ High Line (New York)

Wednesday night saw the transport of FriendsWithYou’s massive installation Rainbow City (first seen in Miami) to New York to celebrate the opening of Section 2 of the High Line. The air-filled structures, some up to 40 feet high, from Sam and Tury, who make up the Miami based collective are sculptural representations of their colorful abstractions, 0f which some smaller versions were seen at The Hole last night (more on that later). This Friday night in Seattle, art lovers will be in for a treat as not one, but two talented artists open a joint show together at the Roq La Rue Gallery. Both John Brophy and Melissa Forman focus their narratives on female protagonists with imagery filled with symbolism and mysticism. While Forman has mixed in her love for the natural world, it looks like Brophy has added in some religious references to his new paintings. More preview images after the jump…

Today, AM was on hand to catch the arrival of the mother of all Kaws Companions (so far). This Passing Through Companion was hauled over from the backyard of the Aldrich Contemporary Museum, where it was last exhibited and dropped off in the front yard of The Standard Hotel in New York.
