Openings: Lucy McLauchlan – “Together…” @ Lazarides

Lucy McLauchlan’s latest solo show “Together…” is currently gracing the walls of the Rathbone Place gallery of Lazarides, and last week AM went along to the opening night to see the new body of work. McLauchlan has put together some intriguing installations around her work in the past and this element was probably the part of the show we were looking forward to seeing the most. Lucy brought a collection of junk items to the gallery comprising of paint cans, cassette tapes, discarded bottles and […]

George Condo x Kanye West Cover Art

We had mentioned previously that an artist we were impressed with from this year’s Art Basel – Switzerland, George Condo, had recently worked with Kanye West on the cover art of his new single “Power.” Here is the actual image that shows the decapitated head of a big-mouthed rapper with a sword through it, perhaps a nod at some self-awareness. Another image (seen after the jump) rumored to be the actual future album cover takes this even further showing Kanye with four mouths.

On view in the Hamptons, beginning tomorrow, July 7th, is the “Art on the Edge” group show at the Vered Gallery featuring artists from the “New Contemporary” art movement (a term that seems to be getting popular). Here’s another look back as the staff at AM brings you a look back at the juiciest stories of this past month. Get served after the jump.

Openings: Guy Denning & David Walker – “Surface Tension” @ Brooklynite Gallery

AM recently took a visit into Bedstuy’s Brooklynite Gallery to hang out and see their latest show “Surface Tension”. The exhibition comprised of works from two artists whose works seemingly take different directions. David Walker’s brighter palates and literal/photo-realistic portraits are created without a single brushstroke; in fact, only spray paint is used. The faces seemed to come together between the metallic and bright hues. On the other side of the coin we also enjoyed Guy Denning’s darker and deeper figurative painting. Utilizing oil and turpentine, […]

Releases: Kaws x Dos Equis

Dos Equis, the beer company whose claim to fame are their entertaining “most interesting man in the world” commercials, have apparently commissioned KAWS (who recently opened his museum show in Connecticut) to design a special limited edition bottle. The translation “Dos Equis” is literally “two x’s”, so it seems like a perfect match for the NY street turned contemporary artist’s iconic imagery. No full details have been released yet but these bottles look to be released only for our friends south of the border. Discuss […]

Basel Week Switzerland ’10: Volta6

The last fair we attended while in Switzerland was Volta6, and although it was way across town from Art Basel (covered, part 1 and 2) and Scope (covered), in a somewhat industrial part of the city, we were glad we made the trek. Unlike VoltaNY (covered), Volta6 was not focused on single-artist booths, so the smaller fair offered visitors a large range of interesting emerging artists.

Preview: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA” @ Lazarides (Beverly Hills)

After the successful first two out of four shows (David Choe & Eurotrash) at the Lazarides Beverly Hills popup gallery, Jonathan Yeo is now set to open his show, “Porn in the USA”, next week, July 9th. The British artist and porn recycler will be bringing with him a new body of work consisting of portraits created with his “special” mix media technique – pretty appropriate for Tiger Woods don’t you think? Take a closer NSFW look at the collage details of a Sarah Palin […]

Basel Week Switzerland ’10: Scope Fair

Part of the fun of going to the big art fairs like Art Basel is also going to all the satellite fairs, and one of our favorites is always Scope. Like in Miami and NYC, Scope Basel gave us a chance to see emerging and mid-career artists that are generally not represented at the main fair. Check out our images from Scope Basel, after the jump.
