Edoardo Tresoldi for Cathédrale (New York)

Recently in New York, Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi unveiled a stunning new ceiling installation for Cathédrale restaurant in Moxy East Village hotel. Entitled Fillmore, the large-scale suspended sculpture above the dining area utilizes the Italian artist’s ethereal mesh technique and draws inspiration from the iconic structure of Fillmore East, the legendary Lower East Side concert hall active until 1971 that featured The Doors, Janis Joplin, Elton John, and more. Basel Week Miami ’19 / Recap: Leandro Erlich – “Order Of Importance”

During Art Basel Week Miami, Leandro Erlich continued his impressive run of mind bending sculptural installations with a new one entitled Order Of Importance. Commissioned by the city of Miami Beach, the site specific intervention right next the ocean from the Argentinian artist featured a traffic jam of 66 life-sized sculptures of cars and trucks, a reflection of the current climate crisis. The massive project (Erlich’s largest to date) covers roughly two-thirds the length of a football field, with the partially buried vehicles reminding viewers of the sobering reality of Miami as […]

Previews: “15 Year Anniversary Show” @ Thinkspace Gallery

A lot have galleries have come and go in the last 15 years in our niche of the art world, but one constant has been the Thinkspace family. Tirelessly promoting their artists with shows at their Culver City location, with collaborative exhibitions with different galleries nationally and internationally, with participation in art fairs around the world, by plugging their artists into mural projects and street art festivals, and perhaps most importantly by garnering institutional support, the gallery has become one the most prominent leaders in […]

Showing: “NATÜRLICH!” @ Circle Culture

Showing through the end of January at Circle Culture’s Hamburg gallery is a group show entitled NATÜRLICH! featuring the work of nine artists. Participants including Fiete Stolte, Hermann Nitsch, Inna Levinson, Julian Schnabel, Kevin Earl Taylor (seen above), Konrad Wyrebek, Lennart Grau, Luzia Simons, and Marco Reichert were tasked with answering a series of questions through their artwork – “What is natural in the sense of original, elemental, or unaltered? What is taken for granted or perceived as authentic, and what really lies behind it? Can some things be changed […]

Showing: Kelsey Brookes – “PERCEPTION & HALLUCINATION” @ Quint Gallery

Earlier this month, Quint Gallery in La Jolla opened a new show from Kelsey Brookes (featured), continuing their support for the locally-based artist that has spanned over a decade (see 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018). Entitled PERCEPTION & HALLUCINATION, the exhibition focuses on his Veil and Form Constants series of works. The first represent insights gleaned from Brookes’ experiences with Insight Meditation and the questions about his existence that arose, while the second are based on four basic patterns of visual perception – tunnels, spirals, lattices and cobwebs – that were observed by users of […]

Recap: Hendrik Beikirch – “Warriors” @ Galerie Wolfsen

Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark recently introduced a new body of work by Hendrik Beikirch, presented next to black and white still lifes and vanitas-like compositions by Hedley Roberts. The new body of work from he German artist is entitled Warriors, portraying people involved in conflicts, whatever the word ‘conflict’ might imply. The works consist of several canvases of different sizes and depths, alluding to the many different layers of truth that every conflict entails. This becomes even more apparent as the light changes and the canvases cast shadows on […]

Basel Week Miami ’19 / Recap: Art Basel

Earlier this week, the 18th edition of Art Basel Miami opened at the Miami Beach Convention Center with 269 galleries, offering artwork by mostly blue chip artists from around the world. Drawing visitors in for the beautiful (albeit chillier than usual this year) weather and gathering of friends and associates, an almost unending selection of paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art greeted their eyes (and wallets) as they perused the main fair. Highlights for us included this Austin Lee sculpture (seen above) at the Peres Projects […]

Showing: Jean Jullien – ‘Petrichor’ @Alice Gallery

Following hot on the heals of his recent exhibition in Tokyo, Jean Jullien is currently presenting a new body of work at Alice Gallery in Brussels. The show is entitled Petrichor which is the scent that is released by rain falling on parched soil and which is often linked in our unconsciousness to memory and recollections of the past.  At first sight, Jullien’s synthetist technique and littoral subject matter is reminiscent of the later work of Paul Gaugin. However, Jullien has consciously disengaged from the narrative of Western art history […]

Previews: Kris Kuksi & Mark Wagner – “Bounty” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tonight at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York, Kris Kuksi & Mark Wagner will be opening a joint show entitled Bounty. While both artists take found objects and create assemblages, the materials they use and end results are quite different yet both quite striking. Kuksi arranges elementals model kits, jewelry remnants, and kitsch statuary into architectural frieze like works, complex compositions that reference “historical narratives, biblical subjects, animal worship, architecture, symbolic views on commerce and development, as well as human psychology and behavior.” In contrast, […]

Showing: Super Future Kid – “Smells Like Teenage Armpit” @ Gallery Poulsen

Copenhagen’s Gallery Poulsen is currently showing Smells Like Teenage Armpit, the debut solo exhibition from Super Future Kid featuring new canvases and sculptures. For this milestone presentation, the German-born and London-based artist converted the gallery venue into a teenager room-like setting, celebrating that period of her life. Quickly gaining popularity with her quirky imagery that mixes sketching, drawing, and painting in an eclectic mix of surreal and comic-like imagery, Super Future Kid was recently added to the well-known gallery’s roster. After successfully introducing her work at art fairs, […]
