Previews: Ryan Hewett – “Order” @ Unit London

Following the successful preview show earlier this year (covered), Ryan Hewett (interviewed) is back with The Unit London for his solo. Opening on the 29th of September, the exhibition will introduce a new direction that the South African artist has taken with his work and approach. Slightly stepping away from spontaneous construction and deconstruction and a deliberately chaotic working process, the new works are cleaner, more restricted and thought through. Solid color backgrounds, carefully chosen tones of paint, smooth gradients, perfect circles and use of masking tape for […]

Showing: Wayne White – “I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, Joshua Liner Gallery became the venue for Wayne White’s new solo entitled I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE. Transforming the New York showspace by taking over the walls with sculptural cutouts and murals, he then strategically embedded his paintings in place to complete the effect. The artist known for his witty word paintings (and his set and puppet designs for Pee-wee’s Playhouse) even transformed sections into what looked to be huge vintage painting – just like the ones he overlays his text onto. To celebrate 110th anniversary of influential architect Philip Johnson’s birth and the 10th anniversary of his iconic Glass House being open to the public, Yayoi Kusama was invited in to create three installations at the historic house museum in Connecticut. Seen here is the Japanese artist applying her signature dot treatment to the mid-century architectural gem’s transparent walls. Those lucky enough to make the trek out to check out the intersection of the two legends’ work, make sure you do so before it closes on September […]

Clare Rojas will be featured soon in a solo entitled The Inexhaustible Middle at Alice Gallery in Brussels starting September 15th. Along with presenting her latest works on canvas and paper, Rojas will perform songs in her “folk-bluegrass” style under the pseudonym of singer-songwriter Peggy Honeywell. With this new body of work, the San Francisco-based artist has been working with patterns while utilizing different compositions and colors. Because she was “letting different visuals reveal themselves, within one work, through variations,” her “main concern was just having the work feel balanced.” Using a limited palette […]

From the 15th of September to the 8th of October, Pace London will be showing new work by Conor Harrington (interviewed). Watch Your Palace Fall will include 10 new large oil paintings in which the Irish-born artist combines realistic brushstrokes with the raw energy of abstraction. The new pieces feature signature scenes of fight and conflicts as well as the recurring motif of the golden mask as a metaphor for hiding your true self and creating a new identity.
