Openings: Dalek – “Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz” Part 2 @ Hurley )( Space

With Part 2 of Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz, Dalek (interviewed) concluded his atypical, yet engaging dual exhibition at Hurley )( Space in Costa Mesa, CA, a stones throw away from where Part 1 (covered) was staged, in truly psychedelic fashion. Last summer, this same gallery space played host to another of Dalek’s outside-of-the-box creative endeavors, when a 37foot! canvas was painted for Chaos on the Edge of Reason (covered), only to be cut up into smaller chunks for collectors to go home with. This […]

Openings: Dalek – “Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz” Part 1 @ 225 Forest

In a partnership that began back in 2009 when Dalek’s (interviewed) art first graced the walls of Hurley Headquarters with a massive 10×22 ft mural, the surf inspired boutique clothing outfit and the Southern Californian contemporary artist have ever since worked together to foster creativity and positivity within their local community. This collaborative union hit a crescendo of sorts this past week, with the artist’s geometric genius taking over both Hurley’s Space Gallery and 225 Forest locations in a single week with a two-part multimedia […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10 – “Urban Alchemists” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

With Art Basel Miami Beach swiftly approaching more and more details are beginning to surface from galleries involved in the new contemporary and street art movements. To coincide with this years event, Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be taking over a cavernous 2,200 square-foot space in the Wynwood Walls section, which last year was a successful inaugural run at an outdoor mural space within the fair conceived of by legendary Jeffrey Deitch and which will now become a permanent fixture for street artists to showcase their […]

Openings: “Pattern Recognition” @ Subliminal Projects

Last weekend, Subliminal Projects played host to “Pattern Recognition”, a group exhibition from a great set of artists including Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar. Particularly eye catching for us were the colorful works of Seonna and Souther although the works of Dalek and Colman seemed to fit the premise of the show a little more closely. More opening pics after the jump…

Teaser: “Pattern Recognition” @ Subliminal Projects

On November 6th, Subliminal Projects will be opening a new show “Pattern Recognition”. The premise behind the title is that each artist included has in some way produced work that consists of reoccuring events or objects, not just in a literal sense though. Show up on Saturday night and you will be treated to the works of Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar (some in progress works seen above). Of note, Souther will be reassembling his fantastic “Alejandro” installation […]

Teaser: “Street/Studio 2.0” @ Irvine Contemporary

For street artists, location has always been as important, if not more so, than the artwork itself. The site informs the conception – and perception – of the work down to it’s very core. On November 6th, Irvine Contemporary will explore this unique relationship with a group of artists that have been bringing the street into the studio for years. With such street art legends as José Parlá, Shepard Fairey, SWOON, James Marshall (Dalek), David Ellis, Romon Yang (Rostarr) and Gaia, Street/Studio 2.0 will spotlight […]

Openings: “Love Conquers All” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday night, AM stopped by the “Love Conquers All” show in Culver City at the Thinkspace Gallery. The exhibition’s concept was based on the struggle of the gay community for equality with part of the proceeds were donated to Equality California. Things don’t always turn out well for themed group shows, but this time, many of the artists were able to maintain their signature imagery yet at the same time subtly produce relevant works. More images from the opening after the jump…

Openings: Dalek – “Chaos On The Edge Of Reason” @ Hurley )( SPACE

AM attended the opening of  James “Dalek” Marshall’s (interviewed) latest show, “Chaos On The Edge Of Reason”, at the Hurley Space. The unique twist to this show was the interactive opportunity for fans to “compose” their own piece of Dalek art. Sold at $200 dollars a square feet, fans selected from either a 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 feet section from the massive 37 foot canvas mural (previewed). The fun part was watching people slave over their decision on what area to cut and what colors to […]

Preview: Dalek – “Chaos On The Edge Of Reason” @ Hurley )( SPACE

A pretty interesting event is taking place this Wednesday night at the Hurley Space (7-10pm at 1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa, CA) down in Orange County. James Marshall (Dalek) (interviewed) will be exhibiting his 37-foot continuous wall mural, “Chaos on the Edge of Reason”, with the kicker being that pieces of the painting will be cut out and framed on demand for attendees to take home at $200 per square feet (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 feet). A smaller companion painting and four limited-edition 36-by-48 works […]
