Streets: El Mac – “Nuestra Gente” (Phoenix)

Some of El Mac’s most breathtaking murals are collaboration with graffiti artists where his ethereal portraiture is overlaid against a background of urban letterforms. Nuestra Gente, created earlier this year in Phoenix, Arizona, certainly fits the bill when he collaborated with local legends Mando Rascón & Pablo Luna. The background designs seen around the face were painted by Rascón and the outer images on the ends of the mural were laid down by Luna. Created in downtown on Van Buren Street, the sublime wall near where the Los Angeles-based artist […]

Streets: El Mac – “Ars et Scientia” (Boston)

After recovering from a period of illness, the talented El Mac is taking advantage of his improved health to do what he loves best – spread his imagery via public art. His latest effort entitled Ars et Scientia was recently painted in Boston at Northeastern University on the facade of Meserve Hall, which was built in 1893. By coincidence, the Los Angeles-based artist’s father went to the university and studied Engineering where he met his mother who was going to MassArt. So the mural, which uses El Mac’s wife Kim as […]

Streets: El Mac “Ánimo Sin Fronteras” (El Paso)

Right after finishing his mural in Ciudad Juarez (covered), El Mac crossed over to El Paso and painted another striking portrait piece. Like the Juarense y Poderosa, Ánimo Sin Fronteras is also a homage to people from the US/Mex border region that suffered or lost someone to violence, corruption and injustice in the last near-decade. Ánimo Sin Fronteras (Spirit Without Borders), is created in his signature technique using only aerosol and fatcaps. This unique painting method require a high level of skills and can control, and […]

Streets: El Mac – “Juarense y Poderosa” (Mexico)

Unfortunately for fans of El Mac, the gifted street muralist has been dealing with health issues as of late. But, luckily for him and us, he’s finally feeling a little better and has been able paint on the streets a bit. This latest piece is entitled Juarense y Poderosa and and is one in a series of murals inspired by those who have lost family members to the violence, corruption and injustice that has plagued Mexico for the last near-decade. The Los Angeles-based artist photographed participants in the […]

Streets: World Roundup (Oct 13 – Jan 12)

During the winter months, we typically see a slowdown of street activity due to the colder weather. After a brief hiatus, our Streets: World Roundup feature returns with a summary of the intervening months. Leading things off is this Invader (who has a new website) piece that is seen in a new light in the wake of the tragic events that went down recently in the French artist’s home base (photo by tofz4u). Other notable walls come from ROA – Germany (source), Herakut – USA, […]

Streets: El Mac (Toronto)

El Mac was finally able to leave the States for the first big mural project he has done out of the country since having struggled with health issues as of late. Thankfully, it looks like he has recovered nicely with his skills intact from the looks of this stunning piece that was commissioned by Eventscape in Toronto. The wall adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway was executed in collaboration with Montreal’s STARE and Toronto’s KWEST, who contributed on the background. Discuss El Mac here.

Coachella Walls ’14 / Streets: El Mac

Yesterday, we headed down to Coachella, not the annual music and arts festival, but to the city itself. Despite the associated name of the huge yearly revenue source nearby, the taxes go to the city of Indio with the actual city of Coachella remaining a poor farming community. This is what the Date Farmers, who call the area their home, and curator Medvin Sobio are seeking to change with the Coachella Walls project. First up, we want to share with you what El Mac painted in the historic Pueblo Viejo area of the […]
